Excerpt from Cooperative Studies of Sweetpotato-Plant Production At both places the Porto Rico variety produced a significantly greater number Of plants than the Triumph. Although the roots Of these varieties for bedding were grown under two nitrogen levels, harvested at three different times, and stored under a wide variation of temperature and humidity, the higher plant-producing capacity of the Porto Rico was found to prevail. Only a great difference in level of nitrogen used in growing the bedding stock had any effect on production of plants from the roots when subsequently bedded, and the few differences were small. Roots harvested during the early part of the harvesting season usually produced a considerably greater number Of plants per bushel than those harvested during either the middle or the late part. In three of the four comparisons of harvest means the roots of the second or third harvest produced Significantly fewer plants per bushel than those of the immediately preceding harvest. In South Carolina and Mississippi storage Of roots under favorable conditions Of temperature and humidity seems to be more necessary for high plant production than artificial curing of the roots alone. The differences in plant production between roots from heated and non heated storages were greater than those between artificial curing and no artificial Curing. These effects are in addition to reduction Of actual losses of bedding stock by use of proper curing and storage conditions. Excerpt from Sweet Potato Production in California The potatoes used for propagating are called seed or seed stock. The smaller potatoes ranging from one to two inches in diameter are most suitable for this purpose. Larger potatoes may be used, but they are more expensive and do not produce so many plants from a given quantity of seed stock. Where it is necessary to use large potatoes, the yield of plants can be increased by splitting the potatoes lengthwise, and bedding with the flat side down. The selection of sweet potato seed is discussed in detail at the end of this circular. Growers in the Turlock district allow about 400 pounds of seed for each acre to be planted. From to plants to the acre are required, depending on the distance of planting. If there is no disease, the seed disinfected, the hotbed properly prepared and carefully handled, 200 pounds of seed should produce enough plants for one acre. Excerpt from The Sweet Potato This work was undertaken with a View to sift ing the historical records of Ipomoea batatas and furnish a working basis for future experimenta tion with its many varieties. It is now recognized among botanists in general, and physiologists and agriculturists in particular, that for obtaining reli able data, the variety and not the species must form the basis of experiments. I wish especially to acknowledge my indebtedness to Dr. John M. Macfarlane for general directions and valuable suggestions. Herewith I present this work as a thesis offered to the University of Pennsylvania in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Excerpt from Growing and Handling Sweet Potatoes in California The term seed as applied to sweet potatoes is a misnomer, just as in the case of Irish potatoes. True seed, developing from flowers and fruit, is seldom seen in the United States, although it has been known to form in southern Florida. Occasionally sweet potatoes bloom in southern California, but seed is rarely formed. However, seed has such a universal meaning among growers that it will be used in this discussion to mean the enlarged portions o-f the root, commonly known as sweet potatoes. Probably one of the limiting factors in the production of a profitable crop of sweet potatoes is the inability to secure good seed in those states where seed certification is not prao ticed. In California neither the demand for certified seed nor the acreage grown at present seems to justify certification. With pro-per precautions it is possible for the grower to select high quality seed from his own fields. The sweet potato itself consists of a root, originally a fibrous feeding root, which in the process of development has thickened for a greater or less distance from the central stem. On each such thickened root, or potato, are found four rows of lateral fibrous feeding roots, which usually disappear before the crop is mature, leaving only slight depressions where they were attached. Fro-m the neighborhood of the root scars, adventitious buds originate and under favorable growing conditions, sprouts are formed. These sprouts have an independent root system and are only weakly connected with the mother potato, fro-m which, however, they derive most of their nourishment. Until they are separated and set. In the Open field. The sweet potato has no true rest period, for the sprouts may start growing at any time under suitable moisture and temperature conditions and often do so in the field when harvesting is delayed and in the storage house in the later part of the storage season.
