Excerpt from Cooperative Studies of Sweetpotato-Plant Production At both places the Porto Rico variety produced a significantly greater number Of plants than the Triumph. Although the roots Of these varieties for bedding were grown under two nitrogen levels, harvested at three different times, and stored under a wide variation of temperature and humidity, the higher plant-producing capacity of the Porto Rico was found to prevail. Only a great difference in level of nitrogen used in growing the bedding stock had any effect on production of plants from the roots when subsequently bedded, and the few differences were small. Roots harvested during the early part of the harvesting season usually produced a considerably greater number Of plants per bushel than those harvested during either the middle or the late part. In three of the four comparisons of harvest means the roots of the second or third harvest produced Significantly fewer plants per bushel than those of the immediately preceding harvest. In South Carolina and Mississippi storage Of roots under favorable conditions Of temperature and humidity seems to be more necessary for high plant production than artificial curing of the roots alone. The differences in plant production between roots from heated and non heated storages were greater than those between artificial curing and no artificial Curing. These effects are in addition to reduction Of actual losses of bedding stock by use of proper curing and storage conditions. Excerpt from Cooperative Studies of the Delayed Harvesting of Sweetpotatoes Experiments were conducted for 3 years at Meridian, Miss, and Baton Rouge, La., and for 2 years at Gilmer, Tex. Under those conditions the yields of apparently sound roots usually showed only slight decreases with delays of harvest as long as 5 or 6 weeks after the first killing frost. Delays as long as 8 or 9 Weeks, however, resulted in serious decreases in yields of sound roots. Although short delays in harvest usually caused no immediate loss in yield, roots that were harvested more than 2 weeks after frost spoiled more quickly and had less starch and less solids than those harvested at frost or before. These harmful effects became more serious as the time of harvest was further delayed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sweet Potato Production in California The potatoes used for propagating are called seed or seed stock. The smaller potatoes ranging from one to two inches in diameter are most suitable for this purpose. Larger potatoes may be used, but they are more expensive and do not produce so many plants from a given quantity of seed stock. Where it is necessary to use large potatoes, the yield of plants can be increased by splitting the potatoes lengthwise, and bedding with the flat side down. The selection of sweet potato seed is discussed in detail at the end of this circular. Growers in the Turlock district allow about 400 pounds of seed for each acre to be planted. From to plants to the acre are required, depending on the distance of planting. If there is no disease, the seed disinfected, the hotbed properly prepared and carefully handled, 200 pounds of seed should produce enough plants for one acre. Excerpt from The Sweet Potato: A Handbook for the Practical Grower Flowers and seed. Although rarely producing owers and less frequently maturing perfect seed in the sweet potato producing areas of the United States, occa sionally a small bell or morning-glory - shaped bloom, with a purple throat and white margin, may be noticed in commercial fields. Matured seed may be produced if the growing period is prolonged by the use of artificial means. These seeds, however, are unreliable for use in perpetuating varieties as the resulting plants cannot be depended on as coming true to the mother plant. In fact, they may differ widely among themselves. This characteristic enables the production of new varieties by selecting strong and prepotent offspring.
