This textbook aims to provide a clear understanding of the various tools of analysis and design for robust stability and performance of uncertain dynamic systems. In model-based control design and analysis, mathematical models can never completely represent the “real world” system that is being modeled, and thus it is imperative to incorporate and accommodate a level of uncertainty into the models. This book directly addresses these issues from a deterministic uncertainty viewpoint and focuses on the interval parameter characterization of uncertain systems. Various tools of analysis and design are presented in a consolidated manner. This volume fills a current gap in published works by explicitly addressing the subject of control of dynamic systems from linear state space framework, namely using a time-domain, matrix-theory based approach. This book also: Presents and formulates the robustness problem in a linear state space model framework. Illustrates various systems level methodologies with examples and applications drawn from aerospace, electrical and mechanical engineering. Provides connections between lyapunov-based matrix approach and the transfer function based polynomial approaches. Robust Control of Uncertain Dynamic Systems: A Linear State Space Approach is an ideal book for first year graduate students taking a course in robust control in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering.

Adaptive Identification and Control of Uncertain Systems with Nonsmooth Dynamics reports some of the latest research on modeling, identification and adaptive control for systems with nonsmooth dynamics (e.g., backlash, dead zone, friction, saturation, etc). The authors present recent research results for the modelling and control designs of uncertain systems with nonsmooth dynamics, such as friction, dead-zone, saturation and hysteresis, etc., with particular applications in servo systems. The book is organized into 19 chapters, distributed in five parts concerning the four types of nonsmooth characteristics, namely friction, dead-zone, saturation and hysteresis, respectively. Practical experiments are also included to validate and exemplify the proposed approaches. This valuable resource can help both researchers and practitioners to learn and understand nonlinear adaptive control designs. Academics, engineers and graduate students in the fields of electrical engineering, control systems, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics and computer science can benefit from the book. It can be also used as a reference book on adaptive control for servo systems for students with some background in control engineering. Explains the latest research outputs on modeling, identification and adaptive control for systems with nonsmooth dynamics Provides practical application and experimental results for robotic systems, and servo motors

In practical control problems, many constraints have to be handled in order to design controllers which operate in a real environment. By combining results on robust control and saturating control, this book attempts to provide positive help for practical situations and, as one of the first books to merge the two control fields, it should generate considerable interest in scientific/acad emic circles. The ten chapters, which deal with stabilization and control of both linear and nonlinear systems, are each independent in their approach - some deal purely with theoretical results whilst others concentrate on ways in which the theory can be applied. The book's unity is secured by the desire to formulate control design requirements through constraints on input and model uncertainty description.

0. 1 Introduction Although the general optimal solution of the ?ltering problem for nonlinear state and observation equations confused with white Gaussian noises is given by the Kushner equation for the conditional density of an unobserved state with respect to obser- tions (see [48] or [41], Theorem 6. 5, formula (6. 79) or [70], Subsection 5. 10. 5, formula (5. 10. 23)), there are a very few known examples of nonlinear systems where the Ku- ner equation can be reduced to a ?nite-dimensional closed system of ?ltering eq- tions for a certain number of lower conditional moments. The most famous result, the Kalman-Bucy ?lter [42], is related to the case of linear state and observation equations, where only two moments, the estimate itself and its variance, form a closed system of ?ltering equations. However, the optimal nonlinear ?nite-dimensional ?lter can be - tained in some other cases, if, for example, the state vector can take only a ?nite number of admissible states [91] or if the observation equation is linear and the drift term in the 2 2 state equation satis?es the Riccati equation df /dx + f = x (see [15]). The complete classi?cation of the “general situation” cases (this means that there are no special - sumptions on the structure of state and observation equations and the initial conditions), where the optimal nonlinear ?nite-dimensional ?lter exists, is given in [95].
