The Paris ConservatoireÂ’s rigorous curriculum for training both singers and instrumentalists led to a wealth of musical treasures in the form of pieces composed specifically for the end-of-year examinations, which culminated in a public prize competition, the Concours du Conservatoire. The solos composed for these examinations, both the sight-reading works and the longer contest pieces (morceaux de concours), constitute the first extended series of compositions for woodwinds, brass, and harp in music history, being composed nearly annually for each instrument beginning in the 1830s. The wealth of musical treasures resulting from this systematic accumulation of works represents the historical core of these instrumental repertories today. The present volume contains a selection ofmorceaux de concours and other pieces written in a similar style, representing some of the most influential flutists and composers associated with the Conservatoire.

The exercises and studies in this book are written to supplement and augment the numerous elementary method books available. The preliminary exercises stress the fundamentals of scales, chords, and intervals in the various keys. The importance of these fundamental exercises must be recognized as the foundation of fine playing. The etudes develop style, tone, and interpretation. Some of these studies are designed to be played by a group, or in a sectional rehearsal, if desired. Careful attention to correct fingerings, rhythms, and phrasing in these and other studies will result in musically satisfying performance. This book will be found to be useful for individual and class instruction.

In preparing this method the writer's aim has been to effect the gradual development of the student both technically and tonally through exercises arranged logically from the standpoint of (a) rhythmic development, (b) gradual extension of range, and (c) development of finger dexterity. Keeping the amount of explanatory material at a minimum, the method of presentation has been left to the instructor who, through his frequent contact with the pupil is best qualified to determine the most efficient procedure.
