Contemporary protest, often presented in media forms as a dramatic ritual played out in an iconic public space has provided a potent symbol of the widespread economic and social discontent that is a feature of European life under the rule of “austerity.” Yet, beneath this surface activity, which provides the headlines and images familiar from mainstream news coverage, lies a whole array of deeper structures, modes of behavior, and forms of human affiliation. Contemporary Protest and the Legacy of Dissent offers a vibrant and insightful overview of modern protest movements, ideologies, and events. Written by academics and activists familiar with the strategies, values, and arguments of those groups and individuals responsible for shaping the modern landscape of protest, it reveals the inside story of a number of campaigns and events. This book analyzes constructions of injustice, group identification and participation in news and social media in anti-austerity protests within the European Union (EU). Since 2008, EU member-states have witnessed waves of protests and demonstrations against the adoption of austerity measures and alignment of domestic economies with the prevailing global neoliberal order. Understanding how the media represents dissent and how it influences public deliberation is of critical importance. It is accordingly necessary to explore the strategies deployed and role played by news and social media in representing and perhaps acting upon anti-austerity protests in the Eurozone crisis. This volume undertakes such a critical exploration.

Sites of Protest examines the global resurgence of protest movements and the ways in which they use public and private space - both physical and ‘immaterial’ - to secure attention for a wide variety of causes, cultural events and moral campaigns. The book takes its readers inside the mindset, not only of protestors and activists, but also of the state and corporate authorities that attempt to limit the impact of dissent. It also explains how media outlets frame the wide variety of international events and controversies that make up modern protest movements, and examines the myths that surround activism and the Internet. Has the landscape of dissent changed forever, or does the fact that protestors still rely on the symbolism associated with a particular ‘place’, mean that their interventions will remain localised and will fail to create a universal appeal?

This proceeding contains selected papers of The International Seminar On Recent Language, Literature, And Local Culture Studies “Kajian Mutakhir Bahasa, Sastra, Dan Budaya Daerah (BASA)” held on 20-21 September 2019 in Solo, Indonesia. The conference which was organized by Sastra Daerah, Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Sebelas Maret and Culture Studies Postgraduate Program of Universitas Sebelas Maret. The conference accommodates topics for linguistics in general including issues in language, literature, local cultural studies, philology, folklore, oral literature, history, art, education, etc. Selecting and reviewing process for the The International Seminar On Recent Language, Literature, And Local Culture Studies “Kajian Mutakhir Bahasa, Sastra, dan Budaya Daerah” was very challenging in that it needs a goodwill of those who were involved in such a process. More than ten experts were invited in reviewing, giving suggestions for revision and at last selecting the papers. On that account, we would like to forward our appreciation and our gratefulness to such invited experts for having done the process. The committee received more than 180 papers from the participants and based on the results of the review, only 141 papers were declared fit to be presented at the seminar and subsequently published in the proceedings of BASA#3-2019 Papers in the proceeding are expected to give academic benefits, especially in broadening the horizon of our understanding in language, literature, and local culture studies. We realize that what we are presenting for the publication is till far for being perfect. Constructive criticism is very much welcome for improvement. Finally, the committees thank for the participation and congratulate for the publication of the papers in the proceedings of BASA#3-2019. The committees also thank all those who have supported and actively participated for the success of this event. Hopefully these Proceedings can be used as references in developing technology and improving learning activities in the fields of education, social, arts and humanities.

Manfred B. Steger’s extensive body of work on globalization has made him one of the most influential scholars working in the field of global studies today. His conceptualization of the global imaginary is amongst the most significant developments in thinking about globalization of the last three decades.
