Abstract: "Let P = [p1 ..., p[subscript n]] and Q = [q1 ..., q[subscript n]] be two point sets lying in the interior of rectangles in the plane. We show how to construct a piecewise linear homeomorphism of size O(n2) between the rectangles which maps p[subscript i] to q[subscript i] for each i. This bound is optimal in the worst case; i.e., there exist point sets for which any piecewise linear homeomorphism has size [omega](n2)."

The book is an introduction to the theory of cubic metaplectic forms on the 3-dimensional hyperbolic space and the author's research on cubic metaplectic forms on special linear and symplectic groups of rank 2. The topics include: Kubota and Bass-Milnor-Serre homomorphisms, cubic metaplectic Eisenstein series, cubic theta functions, Whittaker functions. A special method is developed and applied to find Fourier coefficients of the Eisenstein series and cubic theta functions. The book is intended for readers, with beginning graduate-level background, interested in further research in the theory of metaplectic forms and in possible applications.

This work features the interplay of two main branches of mathematics: topology and real analysis. The material of the book is largely contained in the research publications of the authors and their students from the past 50 years. Parts of analysis are touched upon in a unique way, for example, Lebesgue measurability, Baire classes of functions, differentiability, C ]n and C ]*w functions, the Blumberg theorem, bounded variation in the sense of Cesari, and various theorems on Fourier series and generalized bounded variation of a function.

In honor of Frederick W. Gehring on the occasion of his 70th birthday, an international conference on ""Quasiconformal mappings and analysis"" was held in Ann Arbor in August 1995. The 9 main speakers of the conference (Astala, Earle, Jones, Kra, Lehto, Martin, Pommerenke, Sullivan, and Vaisala) provide broad expository articles on various aspects of quasiconformal mappings and their relations to other areas of analysis. 12 other distinguished mathematicians contribute articles to this volume.
