Through a close examination of India's policies, economic system, social systems and politics, this study explores the numerous perspectives and debates on India's urbanization. The authors link contemporary urban issues with emerging challenges associated with policies and city management.

As urbanization progresses at a remarkable pace, policy makers and analysts come to understand and agree on key features that will make this process more efficient and inclusive, leading to gains in the welfare of citizens. Drawing on insights from economic geography and two centuries of experience in developed countries, the World Bank’s World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography emphasizes key aspects that are fundamental to ensuring an efficient rural-urban transformation. Critical among these are land, as the most important resource, and well-functioning land markets. Regardless of the stage of urbanization, flexible and forward-looking institu- ons that help the efficient functioning of land markets are the bedrock of succe- ful urbanization strategies. In particular, institutional arrangements for allocating land rights and for managing and regulating land use have significant implica- ons for how cities deliver agglomeration economies and improve the welfare of their residents. Property rights, well-functioning land markets, and the management and servicing of land required to accommodate urban expansion and provide trunk infrastructure are all topics that arise as regions progress from incipient urbani- tion to medium and high density.

This Research Topic is Volume 2 in the Research Topic series 'Economic and Financial Issues in the Post-COVID-19 World: Implications and Role of Public Health'. Both developed and developing economies have experienced significant risks and uncertainties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are still risks and uncertainty shocks of the COVID-19 in every aspect of the global economic and financial system, including investors' decisions and the financial sector's development. In this Research Topic, we aim to understand the dynamics of business, economic, and financial issues - including potential structural changes after the COVID-19 in emerging markets and advanced economies. This Research Topic’s main goal is to provide different aspects and consequences of economic and financial issues in emerging markets and advanced economies after the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, we welcome interdisciplinary, empirical, and theoretical papers (panel data studies, survey studies, and time-series analyses) focusing on the business, economic, and financial issues after the COVID-19 crisis. We also welcome policy briefs of people working at central banks, governments, and other public institutions, focusing on these issues.

This book discusses sustainable housing issues in urban areas throughout the Global South, revealing their complexity in terms of urban dynamics, housing markets and human interactions with the environment. Its main focus is on the location of graves within private residences, cemeteries in the immediate vicinity of private residences, and the implications of these factors for renters’ choices and rents. The book addresses the economics of land use for graves in connection with housing choices and the implications for the rented sector of the property market. By means of several model-based simulations, it demonstrates that the neoclassical economics remedy to the negative externality of graves in or near private residences remains generally unacceptable. Providing readers with a clear understanding of tenants’ priorities in their choice of housing, as well as a new approach to the negative externality of graves in the rented sector, the book will be of interest to policymakers, urban planners, investors in residential housing and land economists alike.
