This book is a compilation of papers presented at the first international conference on ‘Challenges Faced in Interpretation and Site Management in Fortifications and World Heritage’, organised jointly by ICOFORT India, the National Scientific Committee on Fortifications and Military Heritage of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) India, ICOFORT International Scientific Committee, the World Monuments Fund, the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, UNESCO, and the DRONAH Foundation held in February 2015. It brought together a team of international and national experts, architects and scholars who shared their experiences and opinions, and looked at possible solutions to the problems faced in site management and interpretation of fortifications. Structured as per conference sessions, the book provides a preface based on the ICOFORT Charter, and is divided into three sections: namely, Classifying Fortified Heritage; Conservation and Management Challenges in Forts; and Interpretation and Tourism Challenges in Forts. The book will appeal to both a national and international audience, composed primarily of heritage experts, architects, archivists, students of architecture, ICOMOS members, and scholars with a focus on fortifications and world heritage.

In the short span of some 50 years, starting with the founding of Santo Domingo at the end of the 15th century, the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors established most of the cities that today are the cornerstone of urban Latin America. The monuments, buildings and plazas that make up this vast heritage continue to define the region's cultural identity and constitute a valuable asset for socioeconomic development. This book explores ways to bring private investors, developers and urban residents into the preservation process, which is beyond the scope of government alone. It describes the different approaches being used to involve these various stakeholders, including successful if not coordinated interventions by public and private interests in Cartagena, Colombia ; operation of a mixed-capital corporation in Quito, Ecuador; and a government-promoted private investment program in Recife, Brazil. The experiences of these three historic Latin American cities provide significant clues about conditions that attract investment, and show why sustained private involvement is the key to furthering heritage preservation in the region. Containing the proceedings of the second International Conference on Defence Sites, Heritage and Future this book promotes the knowledge of the scale, design and functions of defence sites. It brings a better understanding of the issues raised by their redundancy and the implications of different disposal processes for the land. Redundant defence sites offer a range of opportunities to planners, architects and local communities to redevelop large areas, bringing new life to often neglected parts of towns. These opportunities are common to many countries and the papers in this book stress this common feature and help to share experiences of the transformation of defence sites to civilian uses around the world. The re-use of defence sites also raises questions regarding the need to recover brownfields and contaminated land which can have far-reaching legal responsibilities and environmental consequences. This book unravels the formation of the modern concept of cultural heritage by charting its colonial, postcolonial-nationalist and global trajectories. By bringing to light many unresearched dimensions of the twelfth-century Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat during its modern history, the study argues for a conceptual, connected history that unfolded within the transcultural interstices of European and Asian projects. With more than 1,400 black-and-white and colour illustrations of historic photographs, architectural plans and samples of public media, the monograph discusses the multiple lives of Angkor Wat over a 150-year-long period from the 1860s to the 2010s. Volume 1 (Angkor in France) reconceptualises the Orientalist, French-colonial ‘discovery’ of the temple in the nineteenth century and brings to light the manifold strategies at play in its physical representations as plaster cast substitutes in museums and as hybrid pavilions in universal and colonial exhibitions in Marseille and Paris from 1867 to 1937. Volume 2 (Angkor in Cambodia) covers, for the first time in this depth, the various on-site restoration efforts inside the ‘Archaeological Park of Angkor’ from 1907 until 1970, and the temple’s gradual canonisation as a symbol of national identity during Cambodia’s troublesome decolonisation (1953–89), from independence to Khmer Rouge terror and Vietnamese occupation, and, finally, as a global icon of UNESCO World Heritage since 1992 until today. The conservation of cultural heritage is a major commitment for all countries around the world, since it is a complex task and a matter of great responsibility. Amongst other sectors of society, science has a contribution to make to heritage preservation. This book is the result of the international conference Heritage, Weathering and Conservation (HWC2006), held in Madrid, Spain, in 2006.
