This graduate-level textbook appeals to readers interested in the mathematical theory of disease transmission models. It is self-contained and accessible to readers who are comfortable with calculus, elementary differential equations, and linear algebra. The book provides insight into modeling cross-immunity between different disease strains (such as influenza) and the synergistic interactions between multiple diseases (e.g., HIV and tuberculosis); diseases transmitted by viral agents, bacteria, and vectors (e.g., mosquitos transmitting malaria to humans); and both epidemic and endemic disease occurrences.

The book provides an introduction to minimax methods in critical point theory and shows their use in existence questions for nonlinear differential equations. An expanded version of the author's 1984 CBMS lectures, this volume is the first monograph devoted solely to these topics. Among the abstract questions considered are the following: the mountain pass and saddle point theorems, multiple critical points for functionals invariant under a group of symmetries, perturbations from symmetry, and variational methods in bifurcation theory. The book requires some background in functional analysis and differential equations, especially elliptic partial differential equations. It is addressed to mathematicians interested in differential equations and/or nonlinear functional analysis, particularly critical point theory.

Nanotubes of carbon or other materials, consisting ofhollow cylinders that are only a few nanometers in diameter, yet up to millimeters long, are amazing structures that self-assemble under extreme conditions. Their quasi-one-dimensional character and virtual absence of atomic defects give rise to a plethora of unusual phenomena.

The papers in this volume present an excellent sampling of the best of current research in labor economics, combining the most sophisticated theory and econometric methods with high-quality data on a variety of problems. Originally presented at a Universities-National Bureau Committee for Economic Research conference on labor markets in 1978, and not published elsewhere, the thirteen papers treat four interrelated themes: labor mobility, job turnover, and life-cycle dynamics; the analysis of unemployment compensation and employment policy; labor market discrimination; and labor market information and investment. The Introduction by Sherwin Rosen provides a thoughtful guide to the contents of the papers and offers suggestions for continuing research.
