Weeds are a fascinating study for specialists, not only because of their economic importance, but also since in this case biology must be combined with history and agriculture (and its economic aspects). Thus, weed scientists may be concerned with pure basic research, concentrating on general aspects, or with applied science, i.e. having a practical orientation. One of the aims of this book is to create a synthesis between these two branches of study and to review the literature of both fields. The agrestals, the weeds of arable land ~ the most important group from an economic point of view ~ was chasen as the main topic. Other weed groups could only be mentioned briefly (e.g. grassland weeds), or superficially (e.g. aquatic weeds), or had to be omitted completely (e.g. ruderals, because they are so heterogeneous), to keep this volume to an acceptable size and price. Nevertheless, nearly all subsections of botanical science have been treated.

Phytomanagement of Polluted Sites: Market Opportunities in Sustainable Phytoremediation brings together recent and established knowledge on different aspects of phytoremediation, providing this information in a single source that offers a cutting-edge synthesis of scientific and experiential knowledge on industrially contaminated site restoration that is useful for both practitioners and scientists. The book gives interested groups, both non-profit and for-profit, methods to manage dumpsites and other contaminated areas, including tactics on how to mitigate costs and even profit from ecological restoration. - Covers successful examples of turning industrially contaminated sites into ecologically healthy revenue producers - Explores examples of phytomanagement of dumpsites from around the globe - Provides the tools the reader needs to select specific plant species according to site specificity

This book introduces the most recent research findings on selected parasitic weeds that occur in Jordan and are also spread in Middle Eastern countries. It is a valuable source of information for researchers, students as well as farmers, giving readers a better understanding of these regional parasites and their unusual growth patterns. The book set consists of two volumes. The first volume includes information about genera which are typically known as root parasites. These genera are Orobanchaceae, Santalaceae, and Cynomoriaceae families. The second volume covers stem parasites of the Cuscutaceae, Loranthaceae and Viscaceae families. The detailed information presented in this set makes this an essential reference on weeds and parasitic plants in Jordan and Middle Eastern regions. Key Features: - Chapters cover the biology, ecology, distribution, economic significance, host ranges, and control methods of a variety of regional weeds in an organized way - It includes information on parasitic families, genera and species that are found in Jordanian flora and their hosts. - It also provides coloured photos of weeds - Presents the latest techniques for plant pest management - Provides references for further reading - Includes a glossary and appendix suitable for beginners Audience: Botanists, farmers, researchers in the field of agriculture and agronomics, with an interest in the flora of Jordan and the Middle East.

Weeds are the cause of great losses to crop production in the tropics and grassy weeds present a particular problem because of their similarity to cereal crop plants. It is therefore difficult to devise control methods and management practices appropriate for such weeds. This book reviews our current knowledge of this subject and is the outcome of a workshop on integrated control of grassy weeds in tropical subsistence farming systems, held in Nairobi in February 1990. The workshop was organised by CASAFA (Commission on the Application of Science to Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture) of the International Council of Scientific Unions. The contents include a general review of grassy weeds, their physiology in tropical agriculture, management by biological and chemical control, integrated weed management, control in tropical cereals, in tropical grasslands and forage crops, in mixed crops and in upland rice, and overviews of grassy weeds in Kenya, the Phillipines and Australia.
