Hardbound. This volume, containing 20 chapters, focuses on the biosynthesis of the different classes of carbohydrates and their derivatives. The first part of this volume concentrates on the three classes of glycan-bearing molecules that mediate bio-recognition events, namely, glycoproteins, glycolipids, and glycosaminoglycans. Thus, the first four chapters highlight the key role played by glycosidases and glycosyl transferases in the processing of glycan chains in glycoproteins and on inhibitors of the glycosidases. The next two chapters feature the biosynthesis of glycosphingolipids, sphingolipid transport and degradation, and the regulation of glycolipid biosynthesis in developing tissues and tumor cells. Chapter 7 is devoted to the biosynthesis of proteoglycans with particular emphasis on the glycosaminoglycans. In the second part, the volume treats the molecules of importance in protozoans and bacteria. Thus, chapter 8 describes the biosynthesis o

Hardbound. This volume describes the dramatic advances in studies of the structure and function of enzymes which have led to an understanding of the rich chemistry used by nature to construct molecules and how the enzymes of natural products biosynthesis catalyze these reactions. Natural products are synthesized from simple precursors through a series of enzyme mediated reactions that are exquisitely selective and efficient. Questions about the mechanisms of these reactions and what features of enzyme catalytic sites are important for stabilizing transition states and reactive intermediates have been addressed by combining studies in mechanistic organic chemistry, structural biology, and molecular genetics. Except in rare instances, the enzymes of natural products biosynthesis are not found in abundance, and as a consequence, they are not readily available for study from natural sources. This situation has changed through the dramatic advances in gen

Comprehensive Natural Products III, Third Edition, Seven Volume Set updates and complements the previous two editions, including recent advances in cofactor chemistry, structural diversity of natural products and secondary metabolites, enzymes and enzyme mechanisms and new bioinformatics tools. Natural products research is a dynamic discipline at the intersection of chemistry and biology concerned with isolation, identification, structure elucidation, and chemical characteristics of naturally occurring compounds such as pheromones, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and enzymes. This book reviews the accumulated efforts of chemical and biological research to understand living organisms and their distinctive effects on health and medicine and to stimulate new ideas among the established natural products community. Provides readers with an in-depth review of current natural products research and a critical insight into the future direction of the field Bridges the gap in knowledge by covering developments in the field since the second edition published in 2010 Split into 7 sections on key topics to allow students, researchers and professionals to find relevant information quickly and easily Ensures that the knowledge within is easily understood by and applicable to a large audience

Provides a high level reference source for scientists engaged in any aspect of plant research - chemistry, biochemistry or physiology - with primary focus on the chemistry of phosphorus-containing compounds that occur naturally in the plant kingdom, and specifically in the higher plants (Plantae). The book is comprehensive with respect to nomenclature, physical properties, and distribution worldwide. There are many tables of actual data on phosphorus compounds occurring in whole plants and parts of plants. The tables provide detailed data that is needed by the food industry, agriculture, etc as many of the phosphorus compounds are common to both plants and animals. Two appendices cover other aspects including changes in phosphorus-containing compounds during germination and their accumulation during growth and senescence. The final sections of the book comprise separate indexes of plants, compounds and authors. - Comprehensive examination of phosphorus compounds found in plants - Extensive tables listing types of compounds and their occurrence in plants including: Nomenclature; Occurrence; Physical Properties; Synthesis; Hydrolysis; Phosphorylation; Extraction; Separation and Analysis - Easy to use indexes of plants, compounds and authors

Enzymes are giant macromolecules which catalyse biochemical reactions. They are remarkable in many ways. Their three-dimensional structures are highly complex, yet they are formed by spontaneous folding of a linear polypeptide chain. Their catalytic properties are far more impressive than synthetic catalysts which operate under more extreme conditions. Each enzyme catalyses a single chemical reaction on a particular chemical substrate with very high enantioselectivity and enantiospecificity at rates which approach “catalytic perfection”. Living cells are capable of carrying out a huge repertoire of enzyme-catalysed chemical reactions, some of which have little or no precedent in organic chemistry. The popular textbook Introduction to Enzyme and Coenzyme Chemistry has been thoroughly updated to include information on the most recent advances in our understanding of enzyme action, with additional recent examples from the literature used to illustrate key points. A major new feature is the inclusion of two-colour figures, and the addition of over 40 new figures of the active sites of enzymes discussed in the text, in order to illustrate the interplay between enzyme structure and function. This new edition provides a concise but comprehensive account from the perspective of organic chemistry, what enzymes are, how they work, and how they catalyse many of the major classes of enzymatic reactions, and will continue to prove invaluable to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of organic, bio-organic and medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, biochemistry and biotechnology.
