Philostratus the Athenian was a third century AD sophist, who settled in Rome as a member of the learned circle of the Empress Julia Domna. His celebrated ‘Life of Apollonius of Tyana’ is by far the longest biography to survive from classical times and it became one of the most widely discussed literary works of later antiquity. It employs an engaging style that brings to life its charismatic subject — a teacher and religious reformer that travels across the known world, from the Atlantic to the Ganges. His miracles, which include extraordinary cures and inexplicable disappearances, blended with his apparent triumph over death, resulted in many pagans regarding Apollonius as a rival to Jesus of Nazareth. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. This eBook presents Philostratus’ collected works, with illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Philostratus’ life and works * Features the collected works of Philostratus, in both English translation and the original Greek * Concise introductions to the works * Includes translations previously appearing in the Loeb Classical Library editions of Philostratus * Excellent formatting of the texts * Easily locate the sections you want to read with individual contents tables * Includes Philostratus’ rare letters, first time in digital print * Also includes the two ‘Imagines’ by Philostratus’ relatives, Philostratus of Lemnos, and Philostratus the Younger * Provides a special dual English and Greek text, allowing readers to compare the sections paragraph by paragraph — ideal for students * Features a bonus biography — discover Philostratus’ ancient world * Ordering of texts into chronological order and literary genres Please note: there are no translations available in the public domain of 'Gymnasticus' and 'Heroicus' and so they cannot appear in this edition. The seventeenth century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes is best known for his political philosophy, as revealed in his magnum opus ‘Leviathan’ (1651). Hobbes regarded government primarily as a device for ensuring collective security. He argued that political authority is justified by a hypothetical social contract among the many, giving a sovereign person the responsibility for the safety and well-being of all. Hobbes also contributed to a diverse array of other fields, including history, jurisprudence, geometry, the physics of gases, theology, ethics and general philosophy. However, his enduring contribution was as a political philosopher, who justified wide-ranging government powers on the basis of the self-interested consent of citizens. This comprehensive eBook presents Hobbes’ collected (almost complete) works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. The teacher of Demosthenes, Isaeus was an early 4th century BC orator, who was later listed as one of the ten Attic orators, according to the Alexandrian canon. His twelve extant orations are all on subjects connected with disputed inheritances, on which subject Isaeus appears to have been well acquainted. His oratory resembles the style of his teacher, Lysias, notable for its pure Attic and lucid quality. However, Isaeus is more aggressive and flexible in his presentation, which went on to influence the work of Demosthenes. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. This eBook presents Isaeus’ complete extant works, with illustrations, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Isaeus’ life and works * Features the complete extant works of Isaeus, in both English translation and the original Greek * Concise introduction to the text * Includes E.
