Racism is a significant social problem that diminishes the social fabric of society, creates social tension and impacts on the life chances of the people involved. It impacts upon those who perpetuate it, on those who are at the â ~receiving endâ (TM), as well as on those who are not directly involved in the problem. Within the complexities of a globalized world, with its networks of actors and processes, racism is constantly changing its form and impacts. This book examines the contemporary forms of racisms evolving within this context, moving beyond the traditional idea of a single monolithic racism based on biology or culture. It offers new perspectives on theorising the new racisms and looks at the intersections with different forms of prejudice and discrimination such as sexism and ageism. The book places the discussion of racism within the contemporary discussions of the â ~War on Terrorâ (TM) and the allied issues of â ~Islamaphobiaâ (TM) and the â ~New Antisemitismâ (TM), excavating the many elements involved including the media and the State, using case studies from across the world to highlight these. The final section focuses on the challenges in developing a discourse on anti-racism as well as presents strategies towards a platform for action.

Global governance is here--but not where most people think. This book presents the far-reaching argument that not only should we have a new world order but that we already do. Anne-Marie Slaughter asks us to completely rethink how we view the political world. It's not a collection of nation states that communicate through presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers, and the United Nations. Nor is it a clique of NGOs. It is governance through a complex global web of "government networks." Slaughter provides the most compelling and authoritative description to date of a world in which government officials--police investigators, financial regulators, even judges and legislators--exchange information and coordinate activity across national borders to tackle crime, terrorism, and the routine daily grind of international interactions. National and international judges and regulators can also work closely together to enforce international agreements more effectively than ever before. These networks, which can range from a group of constitutional judges exchanging opinions across borders to more established organizations such as the G8 or the International Association of Insurance Supervisors, make things happen--and they frequently make good things happen. But they are underappreciated and, worse, underused to address the challenges facing the world today. The modern political world, then, consists of states whose component parts are fast becoming as important as their central leadership. Slaughter not only describes these networks but also sets forth a blueprint for how they can better the world. The governments we already have at home are our best hope for tackling the problems we face abroad, in a networked world order.

There are two well-known approaches to the study of international relations: Realism and Idealism. This book explores the writings of Inis L. Claude, Jr., a preeminent scholar on international relations, to define a third approach. Pragmatic liberalism, an "in-between" approach, argues that a liberal world order can be sustained and promoted by the pragmatic application of liberal principles. It rejects both the over-pessimism of Realism and the over-optimism of Idealism while refusing to maintain that the anarchic nature of the international system is unchangeable or even that we can change it overnight. However, it is possible to eventually improve the international system. This melioristic approach to world order and international relations can be explained through the sophisticated writings of Inis L. Claude, Jr., who has remained a celebrated scholar and an example to students of international relations everywhere for over a half century.

Linguists estimate that there are currently nearly 2,000 languages in Africa, a staggering figure that is belied by the relatively few national languages. While African national politics, economics, and law are all conducted primarily in the colonial languages, the cultural life of the majority of citizens is conducted in a bewildering Babel of local and regional dialects, making language itself the center of debates over multiculturalism, gender studies, and social theory. In The Power of Babel, the noted Africanist scholar Ali Mazrui and linguist Alamin Mazrui explore this vast territory of African language.
