The year is 1909, St. Louis, when Hester Cunningham takes a position as a live-in helper for Mr. Jonathan Davis, a widower with a small child. Hester believes caring for this mans daughter will make up for her own childhood when she ran away after a dispute over a family locket, believing her father no longer loved her but only her stepsister and new stepmother. Soon after Hester takes the job, she develops feelings for her employer and he reciprocates, but Jonathan is newly engaged. Hester then discovers his fiance is none other than her own stepsister, Melanie, who she hasnt seen in ten years. Since Hester has taken on a different name and is now a grown woman, she is able to conceal her identity for a while, but not the growing attraction she has for Jonathan. Hester tries to fight the feelings she shares with Jonathan, and to keep her identity a secret, but Melanie finds Hester wearing the locket, causing her to discover who Hester really is. Will her stepsister ruin everything for Hester, forcing her to leave once again? Or has destiny brought Hester back to the family she left behind and to the man she was meant to have.

ÒIt is one of the principle tasks of the theologian in each generation to bring the preaching of the church to the bar of the word of God and to test its adequacy as a faithful presentation of the message and teaching of the New Testament . . . If this book can help evangelists to rethink the content of their proclamation in order to let the Word of God have free course in their ministry . . . it will amply serve the purpose of its publication.Ó - From the author's Preface

Belief in the second coming of Christ is indispensable to biblical Christianity. It is also crucial to a positive and relevant Christian worldview in a world that otherwise despairs of real hope. "An earthly hope without the prospect of life beyond death is illusory and shortlived," writes the author. "But a real hope of eternal life with God sets us free from anxiety about death, and frees us to work for the transformation of the world." "The courage, clarity and teaching skills of Dr. Travis in this important book are going to help a great many people." -Michael Green "As a guide to a healthy and biblical perspective in thought and life this book would take some beating ... it gloriously lives up to the solid affirmation of its title." --Church of England Newspaper Dr. Stephen H. Travis is Vice-Principal of St. John's College, Nottingham, England. His other books include Getting to Know the New Testament and The Bible in Time.
