This study looks closely at how 7 North American Institutions of higher education have developed highly focused, intensive English as a Second Language programs to prepare immigrant and foreign students to study in North America. The rising middle and upper middle classes of low and middle income countries such as China, India, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brazil and many other countries has created a surge in foreign students particularly interested in studying in one of the Big 4 countries of international higher education: the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia. This study, in addition to providing useful statistical information about the US foreign student and immigrant markets, presents detailed profiles of how Smith College, the State University of New York at Buffalo, the New School, DePaul University, Kirkland Community College, the University of Calgary, and Central Michigan University have developed ESL+ programs to teach English and encourage the social ties and links that lead to immigrant and foreign student success in North America.

As enrollment figures for ESL and former ESL students in higher education continue to grow, it’s necessary for educators who work with these students to reflect on current practices, develop new understandings, and take action when change is warranted. This collection explores some of the most important challenges for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) educators in a crucial area of U.S. higher education--community colleges. Community college mission statements generally feature a strong commitment to meeting local needs. The studies presented in this book serve to illustrate community connections and the social implications of them. Readers will gain insight into relevant practice while learning from studies that can serve as a basis for additional research. The chapters are organized according to five themes--curricula, technology, retention and persistence, identity, and defining and assessing success—areas that all ESL programs in community colleges are struggling to reform. An increasing number of students graduate from U.S. high schools and enter college while still in the process of learning English. This group--the "1.5 generation"--consisting of immigrants and U.S. residents born abroad as well as indigenous language minority groups, is rapidly becoming a major constituency in college writing programs. These students defy the existing categories in most college writing programs, and in the research literature. Experienced in American culture and schooling, they have characteristics and needs distinct from the international students who have been the subject of most research and literature on ESL writing. Furthermore, in studies of mainstream college composition, basic writing, and diversity, these students' status as second-language learners is usually left unaddressed or even misconstrued as underpreparation. Nevertheless, research and pedagogical writings have yet to take up the particular issues entailed in teaching composition to this student population. The intent in this volume is to bridge this gap and to initiate a dialogue on the linguistic, cultural, and ethical issues that attend teaching college writing to U.S.-educated linguistically diverse students. This book is the first to address explicitly issues in the instruction of "1.5 generation" college writers. From urban New York City to midwestern land grant universities to the Pacific Rim, experienced educators and researchers discuss a variety of contexts, populations, programs, and perspectives. The 12 chapters in this collection, authored by prominent authorities in non-native language writing, are research based and conceptual, providing a research-based survey of who the students are, their backgrounds and needs, and how they are placed and instructed in a variety of settings. The authors frame issues, raise questions, and provide portraits of language minority students and the classrooms and programs that serve them. Together, the pieces paint the landscape of college writing instruction for 1.5 generation students and explore the issues faced by ESL and college writing programs in providing appropriate writing instruction to second-language learners arriving from U.S. high schools. ABSTRACT: Immigration trends in the beginning of the new millennium represent a significant force in shaping population characteristics in the United States. Census data on age and education of foreign-born individuals indicate that they have the potential to enter the higher education system. Meanwhile community colleges appeal to the educational needs of immigrants in search of language training, job skills, and career opportunities. The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between factors of adjustment to life in the U.S. and motivation for educational participation among immigrant students enrolled in advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at a community college in South Florida.

Community colleges serve as a critical gateway to English-language instruction, higher education, workforce training, and civic engagement for many immigrants and refugees looking to gain an economic foothold in the labor market and integrate into the social fabric of their communities. Coming from various walks of life with different goals and aspirations, immigrants and refugees have turned to community colleges to help them further their education, prepare for citizenship, or launch new careers.
