An overview of the history of collective bargaining in nursing is discussed with special attention to the occurrences between 1946 and 1974. The focus on a specific hospital nursing strike situation results in examination of issues relevant to collective bargaining in 1970. The role of the professional, the effects of the feminist movement and the trends resulting in a midwest community are seen through the eyes of twenty persons interviewed. Need for education at the undergraduate level in the area of conflict negotiation is identified.
