The seventeenth century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes is best known for his political philosophy, as revealed in his magnum opus ‘Leviathan’ (1651). Hobbes regarded government primarily as a device for ensuring collective security. He argued that political authority is justified by a hypothetical social contract among the many, giving a sovereign person the responsibility for the safety and well-being of all. Hobbes also contributed to a diverse array of other fields, including history, jurisprudence, geometry, the physics of gases, theology, ethics and general philosophy. However, his enduring contribution was as a political philosopher, who justified wide-ranging government powers on the basis of the self-interested consent of citizens. This comprehensive eBook presents Hobbes’ collected (almost complete) works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer is best known for his 1818 work ‘The World as Will and Idea’, which characterises the phenomenal world as the product of a blind and insatiable metaphysical will. Proceeding from the transcendental idealism of Kant, Schopenhauer developed an atheistic metaphysical and ethical system that is viewed by many as an exemplary manifestation of philosophical pessimism. His works on aesthetics, morality and psychology would exert a major influence on existential philosophy and Freudian thinking. Aldous Leonard Huxley was an English writer and philosopher. He wrote nearly fifty books—both novels and non-fiction works—as well as wide-ranging essays, narratives, and poems. Aldous Huxley is best known for his 1932 novel Brave New World, a nightmarish vision of the future. Crome Yellow is the first novel by Aldous Huxley, published in 1921. Though a social satire of its time, it is still appreciated and has been adapted to different media. Much of what time he had left he devoted to his interest in Eastern mysticism. This interest in mysticism also led Huxley to experiment with the hallucinogen mescaline, which he wrote about in his 1954 collection of essays The Doors of Perception.
