This Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers provides guidance on improving health and safety on board vessels and articulates how statutory obligations should be fulfilled. The Code of Safe Working Practices is intended primarily for merchant seamen on UK-registered vessels. Four main sections deal with safety management, training, common working practices and specialist ship operations.

This code which all UK ships are required to carry provides information and guidance on procedures to be followed and measures to be adopted for improving the safety and health of those living and working on board ship.

The Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen is intended primarily for merchant seamen on UK-registered vessels. The Code details the regulatory framework for health and safety on board ship, safety management and statutory duties underlying the advice in the Code, and the areas that should be covered when introducing a new recruit to the safety procedures on board. Amendment 8 is the latest amendment to the Code and contains two significant changes to the existing Code following the introduction of new regulations.
