Excerpt from Co-Operation in Danish Agriculture In the following pages Mr. Faber has taken the Danish text of Mr. Hertel's Report on the Development of the Co-operative movement in Danish Agriculture and put it into a form suitable for English readers. We have had several accounts before, notably those by Mr. Christopher Turnor, Levy, Wolff, and others, but none covering the same ground as this. Previous writers have described from without: they have visited Denmark, seen the wonderful results achieved by the Danish farmer, and on returning home have recorded their impressions. The present book deals with the movement from within: Mr. Hertel, through his intimate association with the Danish Central Co-operative Committee, and the Royal Danish Agricultural Society, has access to all the records of the movement, while Mr. Harald Faber not only knows Danish agriculture thoroughly, but is also well acquainted with English conditions. English experts have long since learnt to "ask Mr. Faber" whenever any question arose as to Danish agriculture; they will have in this book a valuable summary of the information he has been in the habit of giving them. It would be difficult to find a more entrancing subject than the history of Danish agriculture between 1860 and 1912, roughly the period covered by the book. Up to the beginning of this period the story has been much the same as our own; there had been a steady improvement from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the culmination in the 'sixties. The system had been essentially one of corn production; but in order to get the best results it had to be combined with live stock. It was in working out the combination that Danish agriculture took a line of its own which gradually led to complete differentiation from other European systems. Excerpt from Manual of Agricultural Co-Operation in Denmark: And Hints for Its Adoption in India My time being short, I had to leave Denmark most reluctantly without studying their Cooperative institutions. In 1914 I found another opportunity of visiting Denmark, and I utilized this opportunity in studying the details of its Cooperative Institutions, as embodied in this volume. These details I gathered by personally visiting various factories, business houses' and offices of the institutions; and in preparing this volume I have made an attempt to embody full practical details of the organization, working, accounting and financial success of the Danish Cooperative Unions and Associations which have made agriculture so profitable in that country. The statements of yearly or half-yearly accounts of the various institutions given will, it is hoped, give to those desirous of establishing new Associations, an idea of the extent of business for which separate unions could profitably be formed, of the nature of transactions and the various items of expenses usually incurred, of the working out and distribution of surplus profits among the members, etc. Among the English publications on the subject, I have not come across one giving such complete details of this wonderful organization. It is, therefore, hoped that this Volume will meet a general want. To promoters, organizers, managers, and workers of Cooperative Unions, the information given herein will prove beneficial. Excerpt from Denmark: A Cooperative Commonwealth As I reread the proof-sheets of this study of Denmark and the Danish people, I felt that I should have some confirmation of my observations as to the conditions in that country. A visitor is likely to see what he goes prepared to see or what over-zealous friends want him to see. To guard against this danger, I took the proofs to well-informed Danes resident in this country for criticism. They kindly checked up the historical and social data. They verified the statistical statements from official manuals. They confirmed the interpretation of the cultural life of the people, of the essential democracy of the country, and of the industrial and social conditions that prevail. Denmark seems to me to be quite the most valuable political exhibit in the modern world. It should be studied by statesmen. It should be visited by commissions, especially by commissions from the agricultural states of the American West. Excerpt from Agricultural Cooperation in Denmark In tracing the development of the Danish dairy industry due credit should be given to the introduction of the mechanical cream separator. The first cream separator was introduced in 1878 by the inventor, L. C. Nielsen, followed by Doctor De Laval's cream separator the next year. They came at a most opportune time and introduced new technical methods in dairying which enabled the smaller farmers to combine their milk production, and manufacture a standardized quality for export. Excerpt from Danish Agriculture If one recalculates corn, root crops, and hay to one common term, unit of corn, one arrives at a harvest yielding for the year 1888 of kilograms of grain. The average for the latter 5 years has been kilograms of grain, and consequently for the 25 years a growth of 80 per cent. At the same time the number of cattle has been increased as mentioned before. One can also rightly claim that the value of the live stock in the course of 30 years has been increased by and to this must be added the increased value of farm buildings, dea stock, machines, etc., as well as the value of the something 'like dairies and 43 cooperative bacon factories that have been erected by agriculturists. This development dates from the period about 30 years ago, when the corn prices fell and the economical status of agriculture was less good, if not to say bad. The transition from the sale of corn to the producing of cattle is a very interesting period in the history of Danish agriculture.
