It's a beautiful day for a regatta--until one of Sandhamn Island's most prestigious residents is killed aboard his sailing yacht. Oscar Juliander was a rich lawyer and deputy chairman of the prestigious Royal Swedish Yacht Club. While at first his death seems like a tragic accident, there is evidence of foul play. Police detective Thomas Andreasson teams up with local lawyer Nora Linde to investigate. As they work to uncover clues, they face resistance from an elite world where nothing but appearance matters. When the rich and powerful inhabitants of Sweden's idyllic island getaway come under scrutiny, Thomas and Nora must work closely and secretively to seek justice.

Practical and proven math tasks to maximize student thinking and learning Building upon the blockbuster success of Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Peter Liljedahl has joined forces with co-author Maegan Giroux to bring the Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) framework to life in this new book, Mathematics Tasks for the Thinking Classroom, Grades K-5. But this book is so much more than simply a collection of good thinking tasks. It delves deeper into the implementation of the 14 practices from the BTC framework by updating the practices with the newest research, and focusing on the practice through the lens of rich math tasks that address specific mathematical learning outcomes or standards. Across the 20 non-curricular tasks and 30 curricular tasks used as models, this book: Helps you choose tasks to fit your particular math standards, goals, and the competencies you want your students to build Walks you through all the steps and scripts to launch, facilitate, and consolidate each task Shares examples of possible student solutions along with hints you might offer to help their thinking along Offers tasks for consolidation, example notes to my future forgetful self, and mild, medium, and spicy check-your-understanding questions (CYUs) for every thin sliced sequences of curricular tasks Imparts reflections from the authors on each task The book closes with specific guidance on how to find more tasks or craft your own non-curricular and curricular tasks, along with answers to educators’ frequently asked questions. It includes access to a companion website that includes downloadables and a task template for creating your own tasks. Whether you are new to BTC or a seasoned user, Mathematics Tasks for the Thinking Classroom, Grades K-5 will help teachers, coaches, and specialists transform traditional math classrooms into dynamic and thought-provoking learning spaces.

This volume is a compilation of papers presented at the conference on differential geometry, in particular, minimal surfaces, real hypersurfaces of a non-flat complex space form, submanifolds of symmetric spaces and curve theory. It also contains new results or brief surveys in these areas. This volume provides fundamental knowledge to readers (such as differential geometers) who are interested in the theory of real hypersurfaces in a non-flat complex space form.

Founded in 1959, by John Kendrew, the Journal of Molecular Biology was the first journal devoted to this new and revolutionary science. To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Journal, the current editor, Sydney Brenner, has selected a number of papers from the first hundred volumes. They include the seminal papers on genetic regulation by Jacob and Monod and on allostery by Monod, Changeux and Jacob. Also included are many important papers on structural biology and molecular genetics and papers reflecting the initial developments in DNA cloning and sequencing.Of value to all biologists with an interest in the molecular basis of living systems, the book is a personal selection by the Editor. Readers are encouraged to compare it with their own choice from the Journal of Molecular Biology.

A research monograph introducing circle systems. If G is an abelian group; g is an element of G and f is an injective mapping from G into the real projective plane such that for each four element subset {a,b,c,d} of G with sum g, the corresponding points {f(a),f(b),f(c),f(d)} are cocyclic, then the set of points f(G) and the associated cocyclic quadruples is a (G,g) circle system. The group G is the base of the system, and the element g is the sum. Circle systems with various bases and sums are constructed and their properties determined. In particular, it is shown that the points of a circle system lie on a self-inversive cubic or quartic algebraic curve which we call the envelope of the system. The ternary hypercommutative algebra which is defined on the envelope is used to study algebraic properties of circle systems. Circle systems with noncircular conic envelope are also studied.

This book is designed to honor George Caspar Homans for his many and varied contributions to the development of modern sociology. The chapters have been written by sociologists and psychologists who value his work sufficiently to have made his basic approach their own. These original essays are intended to elucidate, assess, and give a progress report on the theoretical tradition Homans founded and to which he has given such significant impetus.
