The authors treat the three main branches of clinical neurophysiology - peripheral neurophysiology, evoked potentials and electroencephalography - in a consistent and integrated way with emphasis on a clear exposition of practical details of how and why each investigation is done. Their aim is that the reader should understand exactly how to choose and to undertake appropriate investigations, and how to interpret the findings in the light of the latest evidence-based studies. Using historical evidence and illustrative case reports, they address the scientific principles, both biological and electrical, recording techniques, the development and characteristics of electrical potentials in normal subjects, and the ways in which these are disturbed by physical factors or disease. This foundation should enable the reader to interpret recordings from first principles. The main clinical sections are set in the context of typical referral problems or disease groups, showing how the appropriate sequence of investigations and their interpretation help in diagnosis or surveillance of the patient's condition.

This is an updated and abridged edition of the original volume published in 2004. Like its predecessor it is targeted for students of bioengineering, biomedical engineering, applied physiology, biological cybernetics and related fields; for engineers and scientists who have an interest in neuroprosthetics; and for medical practitioners using products of that field. The practice of neuroprosthetics requires a fundamental understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, mathematical neurobiology, material science, electrochemistry, and electrophysiology. The text assumes some familiarity with basic anatomy, physiology, calculus, electrophysiology and bioinstrumentation, which typically are covered in undergraduate and first year graduate bioengineering curricula. These areas are also reviewed here, with the aim of consolidating principles fundamental to understanding the field. With that as background, the book then presents an overview of the field with detailed emphasis in selected areas of neural interfaces and neuroprostheses. The covered topics provide readers with sufficient information to understand the theory, rationale, design, and functioning of neuroprosthetic devices currently in clinical use and under development. The current volume is shorter than its predecessor. This has been achieved by reducing some of the repetition present in certain chapters of the earlier edition and eliminating a few chapters whose topics are now well covered in review literature readily available on the internet and elsewhere. Two chapters have been retained in their original versions to provide important background material, but the remaining chapters have either been revised by their original authors or replaced by new versions written by different authors. In addition new topics have been added to the section on existing systems.

The rising prevalence of dementia in the population continues to pose a serious public health challenge in both the developed and the developing world. Previous editions of Dementia have become acknowledged as a key 'gold standard' work in this field, and have had a genuinely international approach. The third edition has been fully revised and updated to reflect the most recent advances in the rapidly developing field of dementia research, adding further important detail to this already authoritative and detailed text. New material on mild cognitive impairment has been included, and the latest developments in areas such as service development and carer research are also covered. All the chapters have been revised to include the most up-to-date research in their field. This is an essential work of reference for specialists in old age psychiatry, neurology, and health care of the elderly. It should also be a useful resource for others working with patients with dementia, including general practitioners, nurses, psychologists, and other allied health professionals.

This title enables readers to understand how to undertake appropriate neurophysiological investigations in the critical care setting. The book addresses the scientific principles (biological and technological), recording techniques, the development of electrical potentials in normal subjects, and the ways these are disturbed by trauma, surgery and disease. The impact of digital technologies and the possibilities of quantification, statistical treatment and advanced signal processing techniques have enabled practitioners to work to more rigorous scientific standards. The increasing availability of such tools in daily clinical work means that patients can now benefit from investigations of known specificity and sensitivity.

The leading reference on electroencephalography since 1982, Niedermeyer's Electroencephalography is now in its thoroughly updated Sixth Edition. An international group of experts provides comprehensive coverage of the neurophysiologic and technical aspects of EEG, evoked potentials, and magnetoencephalography, as well as the clinical applications of these studies in neonates, infants, children, adults, and older adults. This edition's new lead editor, Donald Schomer, MD, has updated the technical information and added a major new chapter on artifacts. Other highlights include complete coverage of EEG in the intensive care unit and new chapters on integrating other recording devices with EEG; transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation; EEG/TMS in evaluation of cognitive and mood disorders; and sleep in premature infants, children and adolescents, and the elderly. A companion website includes fully searchable text and image bank.

Neonatal and Paediatric Neurophysiology is derived and updated from the hugely successful definitive text reference, Clinical Neurophysiology 2/e. Both publications have been prepared by experts of international renown, and follow a tradition of multidisciplinary team effort - with a strong foundation in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, high standards of practical technological skills, as well as those deriving from considerable experience in the clinical neurosciences. This book is concerned with the specific technological and interpretative aspects of clinical neurophysiological recordings that are peculiar to the child from birth to adolescence. A general introduction details some general departmental procedures that are helpful when running a service for children. Methodology and maturational features for EEG, evoked potential and EMG investigations in infants and children are covered in the book. The chapters on the neurophysiology of the neonatal period and that of the child include a disease-orientated approach to the applications of the techniques. Some applications of evoked potentials and EMG, particular to these age groups, complete the coverage. Neonatal and Paediatric Clinical Neurophysiology provides a comprehensive guide for neonatologists, paediatric neurologists, clinical neurophysiologists and paediatricians. The book is also relevant to biomedical engineers involved in the design of equipment and to technicians. Specifically tailored for neonatologists, paediatric neurologists, paediatricians, clinical neurophysiologists and the associated specialist technologists working with the relevant teams Four-colour artworks and tables summarizing key aspects of information Prepared by international multidisciplinary team of leading experts offering insight and expertise in all aspects of the discipline
