Bound ledger containing approximately 318 pages of monthly financial reports, August 1, 1878 to July 2, 1879, by the City Marshal of Oakland, California to to the City Council. The monthly reports include totals for money received from taxes, licenses, dog tag fees, sewer, library, building permits, etc. The totals for each month are matched by a payment made to the City Treasurer in gold and silver. Also includes an inventory of items used by the City Marshal and street improvements made. The volume was reused by a private citizen at a later date (approximately 1940s) as a newspaper clipping scrapbook for various items of interest including instructions for how-to projects and agricultural topics such as hogs, alfalfa, blacksmithing, fertilizers, etc. The alphabetical index at the front of the volume was used for topics in the scrapbook and the page number where they can be found. Some of the clippings obscure the original entries entirely while others have been partially removed. A few pages have been cut out and removed completely.

Excerpt from Annual Report of the City Marshal, for 1861 Of the 35 arrests for offences committed without the city, 14 were for larceny, 11 for breaking and entering, 4 for burglary, 4 for fruit-pilfering, 1 for assault and battery, and 1 for refusing to destroy dogs. It will thus be perceived that the arrests for our own city, for larceny, are reduced to 115, for breaking and eu tering to 5, for burglary to 1, for fruit-pilfering to 18, and for assault and battery to 159. Of the 1374 arrests, 1068 were of persons of foreign birth, and of the remainder, 117 were born in Roxbury; 245 were minors; 1153 were males and 221 females.
