In historic downtown Cincinnati, Central Parkway is a landmark avenue, noted for its width. But under the parkway was once the Miami & Erie Canal, which connected Lake Erie with the Ohio River. Completed in 1845, the canal was a vital means of transporation of goods through the state. Railroads put the canal out of business, but it remained a waterway through Cincinnati well into the twentieth century. As Cincinnati burgeoned into a modern urban metropolis, the canal became a playing ground for the city's daring youth and adults. Upon the demise of the canal and the opening of Central Parkway, Charles Ludwig, a reporter for the Cincinnati Times-Star and himself a canal swimmer in his youth, gathered together stories and vignettes celebrating the canal's recreational past. Illustrated with historic photos, this book, originally published in 1929, records a time and way of life long vanished.

Just one year after a settlement was established on the Ohio River in 1788 and one year before its name was changed from Losantiville to Cincinnati, an Irish immigrant brought his family to the cabins located there. Shortly thereafter, Francis Kennedy established a ferry service to support his wife and children, and more Irishmen followed over the next few decades. It was a diverse group that included Methodists, Presbyterians, Quakers, and Catholics who were manufacturers, stevedores, and merchants. The Irish in Cincinnati have always contributed to the culture, politics, and business life of the city. Their traditional strengths are found in churches, schools, and fraternal organizations like the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. There is also richness in their ethnic heritage that includes art, dance, music, literature, and festivals involving everything from the annual mock theft of the St. Patrick statue in Mt. Adams, the St. Patrick's Day parade, and the various ceili throughout the year to the events at the Cincinnati Irish Heritage Center. Cincinnati emerged from a tumultuous 19th century as a growing metropolis committed to city planning. The most ambitious plan of the early twentieth century, the Cincinnati Subway, was doomed to failure. Construction began in 1920 and ended in 1927 when the money had run out. Today, two miles of empty subway tunnels still lie beneath Cincinnati, waiting to be used. The Cincinnati Subway tells the whole story, from the turbulent times in the 1880s to the ultimate failure of "Cincinnati's White Elephant." This volume, produced in conjunction with the GSA North-Central Section Meeting held in Dayton, Ohio, April 2012, has a mix of papers ranging from stratigraphy, paleontology, and hydrogeology, to geomorphology, drainage basins, and building stones. The geographic spread of the chapters focuses mainly on an area bounded by those counties adjacent to Montgomery County, but also extends beyond -- from Paulding County in the north to Georgetown, Kentucky, in the south. Topics include the Silurian stratigraphy of southwestern Ohio, drainage basins of the Mad River and Little Miami River, the relationship between geology and groundwater of the Inner Bluegrass Region, Kentucky (and its connection to the distilling and aging of bourbon), and the building stones of Dayton, as well as an introduction to the geology of the Dayton area.
