This document is a joint policy of Canada's three federal research agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. This updated version replaces the TCPS 2 (2010) as the official human research ethics policy of these agencies.

This report provides a detailed overview of key issues affecting gay, bisexual, two-spirit and other men who have sex with men in Canada. Despite major advances in testing and treatment, as well as the development of a robust domestic and global response over the last 30 years, HIV/AIDS continues to be a major public health challenge that requires a concerted, collaborative response. An understanding of the underlying factors and conditions that affect the vulnerability and resilience of gay, bisexual, two-spirit and other men who have sex with men is key to structuring an effective response to HIV and AIDS. It is with this objective in mind that this report was prepared.

Health care systems worldwide are faced with the challenge of improving the quality of care. Providing evidence from health research is necessary but not sufficient for the provision of optimal care and so knowledge translation (KT), the scientific study of methods for closing the knowledge-to-action gap and of the barriers and facilitators inherent in the process, is gaining significance.
