I was about to leave when I saw it out of the corner of my eye. It was a large leather bound manuscript. It looked ancient. My hand began to tingle as I took it in my hand. On the cover it said simply, Chosen. As soon as I opened to the first page, I felt as if I were falling, floating, nothing solid. My name is Emma Carter, but soon the world would know me by a different name. A name that was as ancient as the book I held in my hand. What happened next would change my life forever.

"This is like a life-transforming manual! It would be hard to find a more exciting, inspirational and easy-reading book, so loaded with life-changing experiences, essential advice and appropriate responses to life's adversities and distractions." "This volume is a compendium of sound, practical, discerning and thought-provoking advice. It is a story of LIFE its inherent struggles, vicissitudes, pain, highpoints, joy, sadness, discouragement and bitterness. It is a unique "roadmap" which can be very useful to thousands of students, starting at the high school level. It makes for easy reading and will be enjoyed by a wide range of readers." "This book is an encouragement to people born in the humblest of circumstances; it gives them hope. It is, at times, a painful testimony, but one from which people from all walks of life can learn." "Dr. Ferguson has obviously spent a great deal of time thinking about and analyzing his experiences. I congratulate him for his honesty and willingness to share them. This book, in some respects, is a challenge: we are encouraged not to settle for the easy and comfortable, but to identify and accept our true "life assignments," which may be more difficult to achieve, but will bring lasting satisfaction."

Controversy rages on about God's choosing people for salvation. Are only the few elect? Rather than typically beginning with the preconceptions of systematic theologies, Dr. William Klein takes up this question by searching for a biblical theology of election. He surveys the OT contexts of God's choosing individuals--prophets, priests, kings--to serve divine purposes, and considers God's election of the nation of Israel as his special people. This OT study proposes that God's election is both individual and corporate, but not always determinative. Individuals entered the people of God by birth, but not all the people found salvation. Faith in Yahweh was required. This book traces these elective understandings through the intertestamental literature, identifying continuities and shifts. The bulk of the study, and the heart of the argument, focus on the New Testament. Klein identifies concepts of election, and relationships between writers in the gospels, the Lucan material, Paul's writings, and the rest. The new covenant, God choosing the church in Christ, emphasizes election as corporate, while the individual election of Jesus' disciples and of Paul raises the question whether such chosenness is necessarily salvific. In closing, Klein discusses the most engaging and divisive questions around God's election, and offers a real challenge to today's church.
