Gat Hammer is a young cowboy who has decided to use his savings to buy himself a ranch as the cattle drive arrives in Dodge City. Having earned a big bonus, he deposits his wages in the town bank for safe-keeping. As the rest of his fellow wranglers paint Dodge red, Hammer rents a room in the Deluxe hotel, totally unaware of the fact that outlaw Emmett Holt and his gang are in town to rob the bank. Wealthy lawyer Mason Dwire has planned and hired the Holt gang to make them all rich. It seems that nothing can stop the merciless bank robbers until young Hammer realizes that his savings have also been stolen. The Cheyenne cowboy gets riled and when his trail boss pal is gunned down in the shadows, he rides into action with guns blazing.

“If Chaucer were a Texan writing today . . . this is how he would have written and this is how he would have felt.”— New York Times In Leaving Cheyenne (1963), which anticipates Lonesome Dove more than any other early novel, the stark realities of the American West play out in a mesmerizing love triangle. Stubborn rancher Gideon Fry, resilient Molly Taylor, and awkward ranch hand Johnny McCloud struggle with love and jealousy as the years pass.

In this cowboy romance, young love is given a second—and final—chance. Over the passing years, Rancher Colt McLeod never stopped loving Marlee Fox, but she has refused to speak to him since high school. On a not-so-accidental encounter, he captures her attention and the promise of a dance. Marlee falls in love with Colt all over again but knows she can’t take another heartbreak like the first. If he betrays her trust one more time, they are over forever. The girl who broke up Colt and Marlee has returned to the small town of King Creek. Now a grown woman, she stalks him and turns her vengeful attention on Marlee. Colt will do everything in his power to protect Marlee, even if it means pushing her away to keep her safe.
