Edward Wilson (1872-1912) accompanied Robert Falcon Scott on both his celebrated Antarctic voyages: the Discovery Expedition of 1901-1904 and the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913. Wilson served as Junior Surgeon and Zoologist on Discovery and, on this expedition, with Scott and Ernest Shackleton he set a new Furthest South on 30 December 1902. He was Chief of Scientific Staff on the Terra Nova Expedition and reached the South Pole with Scott, Lawrence Oates, Henry Robertson Bowers and Edgar Evans on 18 January 1912, arriving there four weeks after the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Wilson and his four companions died on the return journey. Trained as a physician, Wilson was also a skilled artist. His drawings and paintings lavishly illustrated both expeditions. He was the last major exploration artist; technological developments in the field of photography were soon to make cameras practical as a way of recording journeys into the unknown. This biography, the first full account of the Antarctic hero, traces his life from childhood to his tragic death.

The myth of Scott of the Antarctic, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, icon of fortitude and courage who perished with his fellow explorers on their return from the South Pole on March 29th, 1912, is an enduring one, elevated, dismantled and restored during the turbulence of the succeeding century. Until now, the legend of the doomed Terra Nova expedition has been constructed out of Scott's own diaries and those of his companions, the sketches of 'Uncle Bill' Wilson and the celebrated photographs of Herbert Ponting. Yet for the final, fateful months of their journey, the systematic imaging of this extraordinary scientific endeavor was left to Scott himself, trained by Ponting. In the face of extreme climactic conditions and technical challenges at the dawn of photography, Scott achieved an iconic series of images; breathtaking polar panoramas, geographical and geological formations, and action photographs of the explorers and their animals, remarkable for their technical mastery as well as for their poignancy. Lost, fought over, neglected and finally resurrected, Scott's final photographs are here collected, accurately attributed and catalogued for the first time: a new dimension to the last great expedition of the Heroic Age and a humbling testament to the men whose graves still lie unmarked in the vastness of the Great Alone.

The relationship that changed most dramatically on the Southern Journey was Ted's relationship with Scott. On the return journey, Ted, in his words, "had it out"with Scott. Whether this was sparked by a particular incident with Scott or not, wewill probably never know. The two of them talked alone for hours, over severaldays. What was discussed is unknown but it seems unlikely that much was left outbecause their relationship was forged from one of mutual respect to a deep andlasting friendship based on a profound understanding, each of the other. It is said that, after this journey, Scott's eyes would light up at the mention of Ted's name. Scott's sister later wrote, "My brother loved him, there was a tender sympathy between them always". That mutual love was forged on this journey. Shackleton's illness was more serious than simple scurvy and it seems unlikelythat Scott had any choice but to send him home on the relief ship, Morning, whichhad arrived with mail and fresh supplies. Their relationship upon return to theship, as written up in other people's diaries, does not have the appearance ofmutual simmering resentment, as some have suggested: Scott was jumping upand down cooking Shackleton sardines on toast. Ted noted that Shackleton'sserious coughing was brought on by the approach of southern blizzards, as washis own rheumatism which was as good as a barometer. Under thosecircumstances, to have kept Shackleton south would have been anunconscionable risk. The ice having failed to break out from around Discovery left her frozen in foranother Antarctic winter; Morning returned to New Zealand alone. The secondwinter passed much as the first, although more peacefully. Bernacchi took overthe editing of the South Polar Times. By the end of the winter Ted had producedover 200 watercolours and sketched detailed panoramas of the newly discoveredcoast from the Southern Journey. In Shackleton's absence, he walked to the top ofCrater Hill alone, refusing company. He was anxious for the spring, when hewould be able to continue his "proper sphere of work" and finally have thechance to go and study the most important biological discovery of the expeditionso far: Lieutenant Skelton, on one of the 1902 spring sledging parties underLieutenant Royds, had found an Emperor Penguin nesting colony at Cape Crozieron the eastern end of Ross Island, the first one discovered.

This book explores how the concept of colonialism can help to understand the past and present of Antarctica, and how Antarctica may illuminate the limits of colonialism as an analytic concept. Despite lacking an indigenous population, the continent has been shaped by many of the same political and economic forces that have defined the rest of the world – notwithstanding its unique governance arrangement, the Antarctic Treaty System. The book provides a fresh and timely set of contributions that critically explore different practices, attitudes and logics that suggest that colonialism may have been and may still be present in Antarctica, ranging from religion to material culture to the treatment of animals. The chapters also explore the connection between colonialism and cognate terms like capitalism, socialism, nationalism, and environmentalism.
