I come from the cares and anxieties of active busi ness, to call your thoughts, for a brief space, away from the busy present to the solemn past. Without further preface or apology, I invite your attention to a simple, and, so far as my time and materials would allow, a connected statement of the origin of this town, and its history during its existence as a plantation; together with some brief notices of the families of the first settlers.
