This book provides a valuable guide to understanding idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), which is a very complex and painful disease. It is a chronic, often disabling condition resulting in headaches, visual loss, and ringing in the ears. This condition was thought to be rare but is becoming much more common, especially as the population becomes more overweight. Patients with this condition often suffer from intractable headaches with poor quality of life. Very few physicians specialize in this condition, and as a result, there is almost no information or resources available to those trying to understand this condition. The text is designed to take very complex neurosurgical anatomy, principles, and treatments and reduce them down into simple principles. The book contains 12 chapters, each organized into distinct sections. All chapters also contain key points from those paragraphs to summarize useful take home messages. Written by an expert specializing in this debilitating condition, Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Explained serves as a valuable guide towards understanding and treating IIH. The ultimate goal is to empower patients and families with knowledge about the disease.

Cerebrospinal Fluid in Neurologic Disorders, Volume 146 provides a brief overview on the current use of CSF in clinical routine, the physiology of CSF, and its usefulness and potential as a biomarker. The second part addresses the main purpose of the volume, describing CSF from a research perspective in context with the most important diagnostic entities in neurology. The book's authors provide insight into the current understanding of CSF changes in these various conditions and what it tells us about the nature of neurological diseases. Furthermore, methodological aspects are discussed, as are shortcomings that need to be addressed. Finally, the book provides an outlook for potential directions that can be explored to improve the various aspects of CSF research with the ultimate goal of being incorporated in clinical practice. Provides a brief overview on the current use of CSF in clinical routine, the physiology of CSF, and its usefulness and potential as a biomarker Addresses relevant research in context with the most important diagnostic entities in neurology Edited by leading authors in CSF research from around the globe, presenting the broadest, most expert coverage available

This book contains the papers delivered at the Fourth International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure, held at Williamsburg, Virginia, USA, June 10-14, 1979. Divided into 12 sessions, they reflect the most recent developments in areas such as head injuries, pressure volume studies, cerebrovascular complications, intracranial hemor rhage, brain edema, systemic factors and infectious processes, data recording and analysis, CSF formation and absorption, hydroce phalus, clinical aspects of ICP monitoring, anesthesia and intra cranial pressure, treatment with barbiturates and steroids, and os motherapy. The book concludes with a summary of the present state-of-the-art in the field as a whole by Dr. Langfitt. There were two innovations at this Symposium. The first of these was poster sessions, the second, breakfast seminars. This volume contains all papers read plus all those presented as posters, and for this reason contains more pages than the three previous volumes. The organizers wish to thank the Advisory Committee for the work done in paper selection and focus of the Conference. Appreciation is also given to the Chairmen and Co-chairmen of the sessions for the preparation of summary statements. Manuscript preparation was performed by Ms. Lucille Browne, and gratitude is expressed to her. The next Symposium, the Fifth International Conference on ICP, will be held in Japan in 1982. We also wish to acknowledge the technical help of Springer-Verlag and their celerity in producing this volume. The Editors VII Contents Session I. Head Injury Chairman: D. P. BECKER; Co-chairman: I. This book offers an overview on the most recent advances in global neuro-opthalmic care. Global variation in the incidence and prevalence of specific neuro-ophthalmic conditions results in geographic differences in differential diagnosis, evaluation, management, and treatment of specific disorders. It covers a variety of disorders from optic neuritis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension to traumatic optic neuropathy. To understand the key differences in neuro-ophthalmic health care, this book has gathered recognized experts from around the world to describe and define these regional and geographic variations of care. By highlighting various international approaches to diagnosing and treating neuro-ophthalmic disorders, this book will be an essential guide for neuro-ophthalmologists, ophthalmologists, and neurologists seeking to build upon their clinical skills in a global context.
