A Study on Understanding our Young Generation: Final Report 3 Acknowledgement We would like to thank the Census and Statistics Department of the HKSAR Government for providing data and the Social Science Research Centre (SSRC) of The University of Hong Kong for its assistance recruiting participants for the telephone and online surveys. [...] Although the results of this study do not focus on attitudes towards the acceptability of the violent behaviours of the demonstrations, there is indirect evidence in the finding that close to 50% of the respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement "the law should always be obeyed even if a particular law is wrong". [...] While attending the Legislative Council question-and-answer session on 14th Jan 2010, Chief Executive Mr Donald Tsang recognized the urgency in understanding the views and needs of young people in Hong Kong, saying "we do need to learn more about our young people, to listen to them and understand their ideas and aspirations, and their expectations of the community and the government. [...] In mid-April, a survey published by the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong reported 25.9% of young respondents agreed with the use of radical means to urge the government to respond to their demands. [...] There are many reasons why there is a pressing need to understand our young geners: the increasing minimum age to leave the education system, the increasing requirements of education and skills in the competitive labour market, the older age of independency and family formation, the worldwide emerging trend away from the stress of basic materialistic needs to the new aspirations for freedom, auton.

[...] The major theoretical concern is the relative importance of two sets of factors in explaining the choice of family policy: 1) the legacy of Confucian values; and 2) the development of the political economy. [...] The set of socio-political 46 Chapter 1 Introduction and Overview foundations of the conservative regime includes 1) a widespread acceptance of social rights that overrides the liberal obsession with market efficiency; 2) the presence of a well-established Church that is strongly committed to the preservation of the traditional family; and 3) the dominance of traditional conservatism in the socio-. [...] Of the four 50 Chapter 1 Introduction and Overview cases, Japan is the closest to the West in terms of the level of development in the economy and polity. [...] The descriptive analysis will be concluded by evaluating the extent to which the family policy achieves desirable family outcomes, by referring to the socio-demographic trends in the 21st century, including aspects such as a) the level of family solidarity (as indicated by the marriage and divorce rate), b) the level of family fertility (as indicated by the total fertility rate), c) the level of g.

Ajrouch, K CENTRAL POLICY UNIT THE GOVERNMENT OF THE HONG KONG SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION A REVIEW OF THE RESEARCH LITERATURE ON FILIAL PIETY THE CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG DECEMBER 2009 2 A Review of the Research Literature on Filial Piety Final Report submitted to the Central Policy Unit The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Kwok-fai Ting Department of Sociology a. [...] 7 The intergenerational gap in filial expectations points to the difficulty of synchronizing the filial claims of elders and the commitment of adult children. [...] Two main approaches are used to evaluate trends in filial values and practices: the first compares current practices with the ideals articulated in the classic statements of filial piety, while the second examines the immigrant experience, in which traditional beliefs and practices are challenged by the new values of the host society. [...] Kwan (1995) cited the increase in the number of elder abuse cases in Hong Kong as an indication of the decline in filial piety, and argued that industrialization and urbanization are responsible for this trend, as they have weakened the role of the family as the support system for elders. [...] However, the authors noted that the level of the provision of care by daughters-in-law and daughters had increased, especially in terms of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), whereas the level of involvement of sons had declined.
