Presents the most updated status of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) physics.

The proceedings of DIS 2001 present the most updated status of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) physics. Topics like structure function measurements and phenomenology, QCD studies in DIS and photoproduction, spin physics and diffractive interactions are reviewed in detail, with emphasis on those studies that push the test of QCD and the Standard Model to the limits of their present range of validity, towards both the very high and the very low four-momentum transfers in the lepton-proton scattering. Moreover, this workshop coincided with the transition between the first period of experimentation at the HERA ep collider at DESY and the start of the updated HERA II operation — allowing a review of what has been learned up to now and a discussion on the main future directions of research in this field.

The traditional purpose of the Adriatic Meeting is to present most advanced scienti?c research conducted by the lecturers who take part in the development of their ?elds and, in addition, to provide a school-like atmosphere for young scientists. Dubrovnik, as a geographical centre of this region of Europe, provided a most adequate location for this conference. Having very agreeable surroundings, the conference site nevertheless gave a focus for very strong scienti?c interaction. The subjects chosen for the 8th meeting, in September 2001, were gauge theories, particle phenomenology, string theories and cosmology. We were able to bring together a very good cross section of outstanding scientists who gave extraorinarily good presentations. Certainely one reason for this success is that most of us feel obliged to help the scienti?c life in South East Europe return to its former level. However, there are very exciting new scienti?c developments as well. Part of the meeting was dominated by neutrino physics which has just seen exciting progress by establishing neutrino masses experimentally. This was d- cussed within neutrino masses and grand uni?ed theories (GUTs). General - pects of neutrino physics and CP violation, neutrino mixing and the bayron asymmetry were presented along the same lines. On the theoretical side the idea of the construction of gauge theories on non-commutative spaces and their phenomenological implications is accepted worldwide within the particle physics community.

This volume focusses on four main topics: structure functions, tests of quantum chromodynamics, physics at the highest Q2 and p2T, and high energy scattering and diffraction. Comprehensive review articles on hadronic and photon structure, lepton-parton and parton-parton physics as well as future experimental opportunities are presented, together with a special lecture on HERA's legacy after the first decade of operation.

This volume contains more than 80 papers by theorists and experimentalists in the field of multiparticle production. A large variety of domains in high energy physics are covered. For each of these domains, an overview is given before the newest results are presented.

DIS 2005 is the 13th in a series of annual workshops on Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The aim of these workshops is to review the progress in the field of DIS and QCD and to discuss and lay the groundwork for the future. DIS 2005 brought together 280 experimentalists and theorists to discuss the latest theoretical developments and new experimental results from HERA, TeVatron, SLAC, CERN, RHIC and Jefferson Lab.
