Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny] The fascinating diary and correspondence of a serving British light cavalry officer during the high empire days of the Mid-Victorian era in India. “Originally an infantry officer, Ouvry suffered a leg injury whilst serving in Canada which necessitated his transfer to the mounted arm. As a troop commander during the Second Sikh War with H. M 3rd Light Dragoons he experienced the campaign in full measure and his detailed reports on the cavalry engagements in which he took part are vital and well written source material. Particularly fascinating is his description of the management of his troop under battlefield conditions. After a transfer to H. M 9th Lancers Ouvry saw hard campaigning during the Indian Mutiny which erupted in 1857. The 9th Lancers earned a fearsome reputation as the ‘Delhi Spearmen’ and it is clear that Ouvry took his full part in what he considered to be justifiable retribution and vengeance. It is particularly interesting to note that his letters were often addressed to his wife ‘Mittie’ who was with him on the sub-continent. Mrs M. H Ouvry also wrote a book, A Lady’s Diary Before and During the Indian Mutiny, which of course touches on many of the same topics raised in her husband’s writing and thus vitally completes the historical record.”-Print ed.

Throughout his life Isaac Babel was torn by opposing forces, by the desire both to remain faithful to his Jewish roots and yet to be free of them. This duality of vision infuses his work with a powerful energy from the earliest tales including 'Old Shloyme' and 'Childhood', which affirm his Russian-Jewish childhood, to the relatively non-Jewish world of his collection of stories entitled 'Red Cavalry'. Babel's masterpiece, 'Red Cavalry' is the most dramatic expression of his dualism and in his simultaneous acceptance and rejection of his heritage heralds the great American-Jewish writers from Henry Roth to Saul Bellow and Philip Roth.

Using firsthand accounts from Vietnam soldiers, this book “tells it like it is, warts and all . . . [an] honest account of a cavalry squadron’s experience” (Military Review). The 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, of the 1st Armored Division deployed to Vietnam from Fort Hood, Texas, in August 1967. Search and Destroy covers the 1/1’s harrowing first year and a half of combat in the war’s toughest area of operations: I Corps. The book takes readers into the savage action at infamous places like Tam Ky, the Que Son Valley, the Pineapple Forest, Hill 34, and Cigar Island, chronicling General Westmoreland’s search-and-destroy war of attrition against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. Exploring the gray areas of guerrilla war, military historian Keith Nolan details moments of great compassion toward the Vietnamese, but also eruptions of My Lai-like violence, the grimmer aspects of the 1/1’s successes. Search and Destroy is a rare account of an exemplary fighting force in action, a dramatic close-up look at the Vietnam War. “Nolan’s research, his comprehension of the political as well as the military actions, his careful concern for those who were there, and, most of all, his writing, are superb.” —Stephen Ambrose

Based on Babel's own diaries that he wrote during the Russo-Polish war of 1920, Red Cavalry is a lyrical, unflinching and often startlingly ironic depiction of the violence and horrors of war. A classic of modern fiction, the short stories are as powerful today as they were when they burst onto the Russian literary landscape nearly a century ago. The narrator, a Russian-Jewish intellectual, struggles with the tensions of his dual identity: fact blends with fiction; the coarse language of soldiers combines with an elevated literary style; cultures, religions and different social classes collide. Shocking, moving and innovative, Red Cavalry is one of the masterpieces of Russian literature.
