Excerpt from Catholic Education in North Carolina After six years. Of experience with this excellent Primary Curriculum, We asked Monsignor Gilbert to sponsor a Workshop in Asheville, during the Summer of 1956, under the leadership of Sister Mary Janet, sc, and forty five Sisters from the various communities teaching in the Diocese of Raleigh, to begin preparation of a similar course for the Secondary Schools of the Dio cese. For the past three years the same number of sisters have taken part in this Workshop to prepare thirteen Teachers Guides in various High School subjects. During this time wide interest has been shown in this new Course of Studies for Secondary Schools, by various educators, both priests and sisters of Communities other than those working in the Diocese of Raleigh, who have volunteered their assistance, in this preparatory work, which has now been officially adopted for the Secondary Schools of the Diocese of Raleigh. Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 3 The Sisters College is a response to two of the mo st obvious needs of Catholic education in the United States, viz., the teacher's need of adequate training and the need of system and organization in our Catholic schools. The many grave problems which the deep seated social and economic changes Of the past few de cades have presented to the schools for solution, demand the highest attainable training in the teachers engaged in all grades of school work. The state school systems have provided for this training by the creation of city training schools, state normal schools, and the depart ments Of education in the various state universities. Our teaching communities have endeavored, according to the measure of their means, to provide normal training for their members, but it has often been felt that this train ing was insu icient and recourse was had in some ih stances to the state normal schools and state universities to complete the academic and professional training of at least a few of the Sisters. This, on the face of it, is a strange anomaly. The aim of education in our state schools is to present to the pupils a world from which God is banished and to organize in their minds 9. System of truth that has no need of Revelation, of divine eu thority back of moral law, or of redeeming grace. How, then, may a Sister be expected to find in such an institu tion adequate training for the solution of the problems of Catholic education which are precisely to show God back of all natural phenomena and to read His will in the law engraven on the human heart and proclaimed through divinely constituted channels Of autho rityi Moreover. Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 5 The organization of schools among the Chinese was more highly developed than among any of the other peo ples of antiquity. State control was, however, exercised by the examination system and not by direct ownership of schools or the compensation of teachers by the govern ment. As elsewhere, there were elementary schools and higher schools: the former seem without exception to have been private schools, owned or rented by the teach ers: the latter were, for the most part, private property also. Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review: January, 1911 Of religion. They were in the possession Of the Church from the earliest days, and their application antedates by centuries the formulation Of theories that are now widely accepted as the psychological basis Of education. It is indeed interesting to note that as a clearer insight is Obtained into the activity and development Of the mind, the principles which the Papacy has followed in its teach ing are seen to be the best sort Of applied psychology. On the other hand, the rejection of these principles by many who nevertheless desire that Christianity should prevail, explains in some measure the difficulties pre sented by the question Of religious and moral instruo tion. At all events, it has been claimed that the teaching Of religion must be kept apart from the teaching of other subjects on the ground that its methods are incompatible with those that are employed in the regular work of the school; and it is worth while inquiring whether the Church in her long experience has not made use of meth ods that are free from any such Objection. Excerpt from Common Schools: A Discourse on the Modifications Demanded by the Roman Catholics; Delivered in the North Church, Hartford, on the Day of the Late Fast, March 25, 1853 Lev. 24:22. Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the strangers, as for one of tour own country: for I Am the Lord Your God. It is my very uncommon privilege and pleasure to speak to you, for once, from a text already fulfilled, and more than fulfilled in the observance. For we, as a people, or nation, have not only abstained from passing laws that are unequal, or hard upon strangers, which is what the rule of the text forbids, but we have invited them to become fellow-citizens with us in our privileges, and bestowed upon them all the rights and immunities of citizens. We have said to the strangers from Germany, France, Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, and indeed of every land, "Come and be Americans with us, you and your children; and whatsoever right or benefit we have, in our free institutions and our vast and fertile domain, shall be yours." Thus invited, thus admitted to an equal footing with us, they are not content, but are just now returning our generosity by insisting that we must excuse them and their children from being wholly arid properly American. They will not have one law for us and for themselves, but they demand immunities that are peculiar to themselves, and before unheard of by us; or else that we wholly give up institutions for their sake that are the dearest privileges of our birthright.
