Excerpt from General Catalogue of the Officers, Teachers and Students of the State Normal School, Salem: 1854-1904 This general catalogue is based upon the one issued in 1887, which was prepared under the auspices of the Salem Normal Association by Mrs. Mary N. (plumer) Hawken, of the fourteenth class, for many years a teacher in the school. Fresh information has been sought on every hand, by every device that could be thought of and from all available sources; still it is known to be very incomplete, and undoubtedly it contains numerous errors. Its publi cation may bring into the hands of the principal of the school many correo tions, which will be welcomed for the card index of former students. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Teachers and Pupils of the State Normal School at Salem, Mass: 1854-1887 The number of pupils in the school having largely increased, the principal, in his report to the Board of Education, in 1869, made such a representation of the wants of the school, that the Board applied to the Legislature for an appropriation of to provide for the cost of enlarging the schoolhouse. The appii cation was granted arid the work of enlargement was begun in August, 187 0, the school occupying meanwhile the lower story of the City High School building, the use of Which had been freely granted by the city authorities. The school returned to the Normal School building in J une, 1871, the enlargement having been completed, with the exception of three small rooms in the third story which were completed the following year.
