The book examines and analyses in depth the specific issues which are currently occupying the marine insurance markets and the law. The London market is currently re-examining its practices and international competitiveness; and the English case law is growing significantly. The issues identified in the book are the “fundamental issues” on which marine insurance law is based, and which are in the process of being re-examined and developed further to respond to the needs of modern insurance practice. Insurance Law Implications of Delay in Maritime Transport is the first single book to deal specifically with this issue in the context of insurance law. The Marine Insurance Policy of Antwerp of 1 July 1859 is one of the most widespread maritime insurance policies in the world. After 145 years, a need for modernisation of the language and adaptation of the text for present-day needs led to its successor, the Cargo Insurance Policy of Antwerp of 1 April 2004. The author describes the content and exact meaning of the various provisions by means of analysis of the 150 years of case law which has been generated by the Policy of 1859 and the preparatory texts of insurers and insurance brokers for the new Policy provisions. This is the first systematic commentary on this subject. The book is set up as a clause-by-clause commentary wherein the author systematically compares the original wording of the provisions to the construction which is given to them by case law of the ordinary courts and of arbitrators. This English translation (Dutch title: "De goederenverzekeringspolis van Antwerpen") will help in the uniform construction and application of the provisions of the Policy.

Between 2001 and 2002 the Maritime Institute of the Universiteit Gent and the Centre for International Law of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel joined efforts and hosted Emeritus Professor Dermott Devine as holder of the International Francqui Chair, around the central themes of fisheries and coastal state jurisdiction with respect to marine pollution. As Emeritus Director of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Law, Professor Devine was available for discussion and participation in the scientific life of the different Belgian universities having similar fields of interest. Within this context six classes of excellence were organized with the participation of interested Belgian colleagues across the board, belonging to universities adhering to different basic philosophies and even forming part of different linguistic communities. These classes culminated in a final symposium where Professor Devine gave a birds-eye view of the general theme, overarching and synthesizing the different subjects covered during the previous classes of excellence. This book offers a reworked compilation of all the contributions of the key-note speakers to the classes of excellence.
