Large construction projects such as Stuttgart 21, the Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg, and Les Halles in Paris have one thing in common: the potential for enormous conflict. Yet, debates over large architectural projects foster more than just aggressive polemics; the knowledge of society gained can be applied to negotiation and mediation processes. What kinds of realizations, however, can be accrued from these experiences and used in the future? Architektur als Streitsache (Architecture as dispute) was a conference that explored this question in particular. Its results are now accessible to the broader public in the current collector's volumes, Candide 10 and 11. They offer interesting insights, fascinating perspectives of production histories, and surprising developments. All of the essays share an understanding of architecture as not just the art of building, but as the creation of social spaces in which we all live.

Fotograf*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen experimentierten mit anthropologischen, kulturwissenschaftlichen, soziologischen und geografischen Methoden, für eine Reflexion über die meist unkritische Nutzung von Bildern des öffentlichen Raums. Candide 12 sucht Möglichkeiten, diese Ergebnisse in Architektur und Stadtplanung zu integriert. Dabei beantworten Autor*innen drängende Fragen, wie nach der Nutzbarmachung fotografischer Bilder für die Architektur und vice versa.

Candide is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to exploring the culture of knowledge specific to architecture. It is released twice a year in English and German. Each issue of Candide is made up of five distinct sections. This frame- work responds to the diversity of architectural knowledge being produced, while challenging authors from all disciplines to test a variety of genres in order to write about and represent architecture. "Essay" provides a forum for discussion of architectural knowledge, including both fundamental research into and speculative arguments on its nature. "Analysis" allows for in-depth examination of built form: how can the knowledge embodied in buildings be retrospectively extracted and creatively re-used? "Project" is directed at architects who see design as a theoretical tool: how can a specific design proposal become a model of thought? "Encounters" gives access to the personal knowledge of renowned, unjustly forgotten, or entirely unknown protagonists of architecture. "Fiction" reflects the editors' conviction that sometimes the imaginary may reveal more about architectural knowledge than science.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was one of the leading figures of twentieth-century architecture. For architects and many others who are committed to the modernist tradition, he is a pivotal figure. Both architecture and anthropology emerged as autonomous theoretical disciplines in the 18th-century enlightenment. Throughout the 19th century, the fields shared a common icon—the primitive hut—and a common concern with both routine needs and ceremonial behaviours. Both could lay strong claims to a special knowledge of the everyday. And yet, in the 20th century, notwithstanding genre classics such as Bernard Rudofsky’s Architecture without Architects or Paul Oliver’s Shelter, and various attempts to make architecture anthropocentric (such as Corbusier’s Modulor), disciplinary exchanges between architecture and anthropology were often disappointingly slight. This book attempts to locate the various points of departure that might be taken in a contemporary discussion between architecture and anthropology. The results are radical: post-colonial theory is here counterpoised to 19th-century theories of primitivism, archaeology is set against dentistry, fieldwork is juxtaposed against indigenous critique, and climate science is applied to questions of shelter. This publication will be of interest to both architects and anthropologists. The chapters in this book were originally published within two special issues of Architectural Theory Review.

Bringing together leading scholars from around the world and across scholarly disciplines, this collection of 32 original chapters provides a comprehensive exploration of the relationships between cities and media. The volume showcases diverse methods for studying media and the city and posits "media urbanism" as an approach to the co-construction and interactions among media texts and technologies, media users, media industries, media histories, and urban space. Chapters serve as a guide to humanities-based ways of studying urban imaginaries, infrastructures and architectures, development and redevelopment, and strategies and tactics as well as a provocation toward new lines of inquiry that further explore the dense interconnectedness of media and cities. Part I: Imaginaries and cityscapes focuses on screen representations and mediated experiences of urban space produced and consumed by various actors; Part II: Architectures and infrastructures highlights the different ways in which built environments and socio-technical substrates that sustain differential mobilities, urban rhythms, and systems of circulation and exchange are intertwined with various forms of media and mediation; Part III: Development and redevelopment examines efforts by urban planners and designers, municipal governments, and community organizers to utilize media forms to imagine and shape the construction of the space and meaning of the city; finally, Part IV: Strategies and tactics uses categories for practices of control and resistance to investigate media and struggles for power within urban environments from surveillance and place-branding to activist media and the right to the city. The photobook visually and materially contextualizes arrangements of photographs and brings them into a sensually tangible form. The book format, the materiality of the paper, and the type of binding have just as much of an effect on the viewer as the selection of images, their positioning in the layout, typography, and the texts. The artist and theorist Bettina Lockemann provides an approach to the medium from a research perspective: considering the photobook as an independent subject of art theories, her phenomenological discussion complements methodological lines of thought. An important contribution to the photobook as an independent field of research, Lockemann elaborates precise terms for analyzing this medium. Through a practice-based examination of contemporary photobooks, this guide emphasizes the status of the photobook as an artwork in its own right. BETTINA LOCKEMANN (*1971) is an artist and scholar specialized in artistic documentary photography. After studying art photography and media art in Leipzig and earning a PhD in art history at the ABK Stuttgart she was professor for practice and theory of photography at the HBK Braunschweig for five years.
