Excerpt from Errors in Canadian History: Culled From "Prize Answers" Hermes has recently published his answers in pamphlet form, with the supposed Weight attach ing to the fact of his being the winner of the first prize and his answers are, in nearly every case, literally the same as those which the Spectator, with the assumed authority of a judge in the matter, decided to be the right ones. Additional prestige arises from the fact that he is the son of a well-known writer of Canadian History, whose works are used as text-books in many of our schools; and, moreover, the statement has been made in the public prints, and has not. Been contradicted, that the numerous notes and comments, forming part of the appendix, are from the pen of Mr. Miles' father. In these notes, only two or three of the answers are declared to be not altogether faultless, and it may therefore fairly be inferred that, in the majority of instances, the assertions of Hermes have the sanction of his father's approval. Excerpt from Under the Lily and the Rose, Vol. 2: A Short History of Canada for Children It would seem strange in our own day to read an Official notice like this On Sunday next Divine Service according to the use of the Church of England will be held at the Récollet Church and continue for the summer season, beginning soon after eleven. The drum will beat each Sunday Shortly after half-past ten, and the Récollets' bell will ring to give notice of the English service the instant their own is ended. After the church was destroyed by fire the Church Of England service was held in the Jesuits' Chapel. Later, when the first Pro testant Bishop Of Quebec came, the Catholic Bishop met him at the wharf and assured him he had done his best to look after his flock.
