Despite a long and rich tradition of oral history research, few are aware of the innovative and groundbreaking work of oral historians in Canada. Connecting Canadians examines the role of community informatics, or community-based ICT initiatives, in this process of transition. The Community Research Alliance for Community Innovation and Networking (CRACIN) set out to study how civil society groups--in locations ranging from Vancouver to Labrador and from remote Northern communities to Toronto and Montréal--sought to enable local communities to develop on their own terms within the broader context of federal and provincial policies and programs. Drawing on diverse theoretical perspectives, from sociology to library and information sciences to women's studies, the essays not only document specific local initiatives but analyze the overall trajectory of the government's vision of a digitally inclusive Canada.

The first graduate conference of the Young Scholars' Network of the Association for Canadian Studies in German-speaking countries took place in Berlin in 2004. The conference has been an integral part of the academic year in Canadian Studies ever since. It offers an opportunity for young scholars to present their B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. projects and receive feedback and helpful suggestions from peers and experts. This type of academic exchange is particularly important in Canadian Studies as they often occupy a marginal position at universities. Beside graduate students from Canada, Germany and Austria, prominent Canadian scholars have also been invited to speak at the conference every year. This volume contains selected contributions (in English, German and French) presented at the first five graduate conferences and demonstrates the large scope of Canadian studies in German-speaking countries. Die erste Graduiertentagung für Kanada-Studien des Nachwuchsforums der Gesellschaft für Kanada-Studien e. V. (GKS) wurde 2004 in Berlin veranstaltet. Dieses Forum für junge KanadistInnen ist seitdem ein fixer Bestandteil des akademischen Jahres der Kanada-Studien geworden: Angehende WissenschaftlerInnen präsentieren Abschlussarbeiten und in Arbeit befindliche Dissertationen und bekommen von ExpertInnen und KollegInnen fachliche Reaktionen und Hilfestellung. Dies ist besonders für einen Bereich wie die Kanada-Studien von Bedeutung, da sie an vielen Universitäten nur marginal vertreten sind. Neben Graduierten aus Kanada, Deutschland und Österreich haben regelmäßig auch international anerkannte kanadische WissenschaftlerInnen teilgenommen. Dieser Band präsentiert eine Zusammenstellung (in englischer, deutscher und französischer Sprache) der interessantesten Vorträge der ersten fünf Jahre der Graduiertentagungen und demonstriert die Vielfalt der Projekte und der Kanada-Studien insgesamt.

How do countries come to view themselves as being 'multicultural'? Us, Them, and Others presents a dynamic new model for understanding pluralism based on the triangular relationship between three groups — the national majority, historically recognized minorities, and diverse immigrant bodies. Elke Winter's research illustrates how compromise between unequal groups is rendered meaningful through confrontation with real or imagined outsiders. Us, Them, and Others sheds new light on the astonishing resilience of Canadian multiculturalism in the late 1990s, when multicultural policies in other countries had already come under heavy attack. Winter draws on analyses of English-language newspaper discourses and a sociological framework to connect discourses of pan-Canadian multicultural identity to representations of Quebecois nationalism, immigrant groups, First Nations, and the United States. Taking inspiration from the Canadian experience, Us, Them, and Others is an enticing examination of national identity and pluralist group formation in diverse societies.

This book tests the limits of fugitivity as a concept in recent Black feminist and Afro-pessimist thought. It follows the conceptual travels of confinement and flight through three major Black writing traditions in North America from the 1840s to the early 21st century. Cultural analysis is the basic methodological approach and recent concepts of captivity and fugitivity in Afro-pessimist and Black feminist theory form the theoretical framework.

With aggravating global realignments, the dynamics and contradictions of a world (risk) society are looming ahead in the unfolding Third Millennium while globalization is gaining further steam. To this bears witness a potpourri of often frightening geopolitical, social, cultural, economic, demographic, ecological and other changes and challenges that gives substantial cause for concern about getting lost in a 'trans-whatever' sea of turmoil, uncertainty and indeterminateness. The resultant current backlash or rather renewed interest in the nation as a collective identity-establishing category is an effort to gain some anchorage in ever more disintegrating times and proves especially those theoreticians wrong for whom the whole concept of the nation has worn off since long. In 16 resourceful essays internationally distinguished Canadian and European experts from a variety of fields take a fresh look at these developments by focussing on one of the most fascinating multicultural and multifaceted nation(-state)s in the world, Canada in the Third Millennium. The topics they discuss include, among others, Canada's difficult dissociation from Europe and the USA; the reframing and reclaiming of the Canadian story; the role of nations within the nation; the efforts to transcend the nation; pending geopolitical and (geo)ecological crises; glocal issues and new wars. Collectively, the entries prove that Canada is a very progressive nation and opens up new perspectives for other collectives currently reassessing their national identities in a global environment. Thus, the book reaches well beyond the study of 'Canada' and will be valuable to academics, professionals, teachers and students of various disciplines coping with the issue at stake as well as the general reader.
