Excerpt from Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress Two other changes adapt this edition to its particular use. Bunyan's marginal explanations, though they are sometimes racy, are now quite superfluous for people accustomed to read currently; and the marginal references to the Bible are equally superfluous for a generation well supplied with concordances. Moreover these marginal notes, if indeed they were used, might be a distraction, instead of a help, in the school study of literature. Therefore they have been omitted. Excerpt from Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress: In Verse When this metrical version of Pilgrim's Progress was commenced, years ago, I did not think of making a book, though I have always shared with the multitude in the admiration of the genius of Bunyan. While meditating on the duties and trials of the Christian life, I took up Pilgrim's Progress, and began to read, pen in hand, for my own benefit.
