The 1880 Cunsus of Bulloch County, Georgia has been transcribed from an average microfilm, and then double checked on a larger and more powerful microfilm to increase accuracy. The columns represent the following: Page number (as taken from the upper right corner stamped in. Household number Family number Name of persons listed by the enumerator as living there at that time. If there are two families in one household, it will be the household remains the same. Color: W=white; B=Black; Mu=Mulatto. Only the head of the household carries this data, with the exception of Mu as there is often a mixture of Mu and B in the same family. Sex: M=male; F-female Relationship to head of house Month of birth if born in the census year. Occupation: The reader should assume Farmer unless shown otherwise. Or, laborer if someone living with the family. Place of birth. This is in three columns; the first represents the place of birth for the person named to the left; Place of birth of father Place of birth of mother (Assume Georgia unless stated otherwise). Index: Only the head of the household has been listed in the index at the end of the book, unless there is a surname in the family which is different from that of the head of the family. It is then listed. The first enumerator was a very poor speller and had a poor penmanship. Many names have been compared with the 1870 census as a double-check, but liberties have not been taken in changing names. This volume contains the names of 52,000 Georgia heads of household, giving for each the county of residence and page number in the census where his name appears. Individuals are indexed alphabetically by surname. A particularly interesting feature of the book is the method of dealing with variant spellings: all names of like sound are grouped together, the variants being arranged in order of the most frequently used spelling, so the researcher is unlikely to miss a name through oversight or carelessness. The compiler of the book, moreover, was a nationally known figure in federal administration programs and a Certified Genealogist.
