"God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" is the way Paul concluded his letter to the Galatians, maintaining that putting the Christian under the Law or human effort to attain God's approval or righteousness is a negation, not just a relegation of faith in Christ. He saw it as a matter of eternal consequences and was unapologetic in his rebuke of them. We brag only on the Cross of Calvary: not on our efforts, not on our tithing, not on our activities or performance. We do not lay claim to anything other than the finished work of our Lord knowing that depending on our own work and efforts is falling from grace. This book aims to be reenactment enough of Paul's Spirit-led apoplexy to remind the Christian that he is the Israel of God, that the Promise to Abraham was in Christ, Christ the end of the Law. We stand justified only by faith, Abraham a paradigm, natural Israel but a parable illustrating the failure of the Law and the futility of human effort to attain God's righteousness.

"Dallas and Houston get along like brothers-- Cain and Abel. True, at first glance they seem much the same. Both are large Texas cities filled with people from somewhere else. Stand on any major street corner in either place and you can't tell the difference: Best Buy, Whataburger, CVS, and there's even a Galleria (Houston's is bigger). Same governor and U.S. Senators. The billboard and license plates are identical. It might be argued that, while Houston and Dallas plates are identical. It might be argued that, while Houston and Dallas are their given names, Texas is the family name. Yet this is more than two squabbling siblings. This is big-time competition for jobs, new companies, airline routes (Dallas has more), and bragging rights in sports and barbeque ... Which city deserves bragging rights? We've asked people from both places a few questions. Now we'll leave it up to you to decide."--Page 4 of cover

Poor Bridgit, who overestimated the size of her head—her homemade frilly lace shower cap came straight down to her chin. And who can blame Lindsey for thinking “glitter shoes” sounded like a cool, easy project instead of what it turned out to be: a puddle of sparkling glop. And really, whoever posted that incredible Spaghetti-Stuffed Garlic Bread on Pinterest should be sued. When Mindy pulled hers from the oven, it looked like a “hot mess of intestines streaming out of doughy flesh.” Mmmm, thank you, Pinterest! Written by Heather Mann, publisher of CraftFail.com, her hilarious blog with millions of page views and hundreds of thousands of followers, CraftFail celebrates the creative process, but from the other side. This is the stuff that gets the “A for Effort” and LOL for outcome. But once the laughter dies down, it also inspires a warm feel-good respect for crafters who aren’t afraid to fail. After all, even if there’s not a mortal alive except Martha who can make a Waxed Heart worthy of hanging in your window to catch the sun, why shouldn’t many try? When it goes wrong, why shouldn’t the rest of us enjoy this Epic Fail? And then look at all the full-color photos that document it. Home decor fails, fashion fails, holiday fails, food fails, kid crafting fails— as one anonymous crafter said: “It wasn’t supposed to end this way.” Luckily for us, it did.

The National Book Award-winning classic from the author of Underworld and Libra, now a major motion picture starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig White Noise tells the story of Jack Gladney, his fourth wife, Babette, and four ultramodern offspring as they navigate the rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. When an industrial accident unleashes an "airborne toxic event," a lethal black chemical cloud floats over their lives. The menacing cloud is a more urgent and visible version of the "white noise" engulfing the Gladneys—radio transmissions, sirens, microwaves, ultrasonic appliances, and TV murmurings—pulsing with life, yet suggesting something ominous. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. An abridged edition of the world’s first novel, in a translation that is “likely to be the definitive edition . . . for many years to come” (The Wall Street Journal) A Penguin Classic Written in the eleventh century, this exquisite portrait of courtly life in medieval Japan is widely celebrated as the world’s first novel—and is certainly one of its finest. Genji, the Shining Prince, is the son of an emperor. He is a passionate character whose tempestuous nature, family circumstances, love affairs, alliances, and shifting political fortunes form the core of this magnificent epic. Royall Tyler’s superior translation is detailed, poetic, and superbly true to the Japanese original while allowing the modern reader to appreciate it as a contemporary treasure. In this deftly abridged edition, Tyler focuses on the early chapters, which vividly evoke Genji as a young man and leave him at his first moment of triumph. This edition also includes detailed notes, glossaries, character lists, and chronologies.
