First published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.

A Permanent Bond is an international and legal thriller which explodes a conflict between a shipbuilder in the Republic of China and one in the United States over the acquisition of a revolutionary discovery: an epoxy that bonds enormous sheets of steel, saving millions of dollars in labor costs during the construction of large container vessels. Ben Leavitt, an M.I.T. graduate who has spent years in his loft configuring his formula, now faces a divorce from his neglected wife who, with their eighteen year old son, has moved into posh quarters on Louisburg Square on Beacon Hill, Boston, with her boyfriend. The riveting story details the activities of Chinatown in Boston, the smuggling of immigrants through the foggy marshes and wooded forests of the twenty-eight mile Indian Territory which spans both sides of the United States and Canadian borders, the kidnapping of Bens son, Adam, and the struggle between two warring Boston Tongs for approval from Beijing.

With the character-driven drama of All Our Yesterdays and the psychological thrills of the Mara Dyer trilogy, Shadows and Bonds: Connection is a deep, emotional journey through the human mind, and what it means to be truly connected to one another. Was it really an accident, or was it calculation? This decade’s technological revolution, Bonding takes two compatible people and links their minds together. Although not at the level of reading people’s thoughts, it’s still like steroids for your brain; you get smarter, and by getting smarter you get faster, stronger, just better. So why is Martin Kelly so hesitant to get Bonded to his high school sweetheart, Pola? Maybe, because Bonding is for life. Probably, because he’s never been good at making decisions for himself. But in order to become a trainee at the Chicago Police Academy of Bonding Technology, Martin is required to become mind-linked. The right choice appears obvious. Meg Sawyer defies the obvious. As a matter of fact, she has done so seventeen times. Already a trainee in the Academy, Meg believes that Bonding is an overrated, societal fad. She wants no part of it. But to stay in the Academy, she has one last chance: Bond with fellow student, Tuscan Hatch, or get kicked out. But when an incident occurs in the Bonding labs, Meg and Martin's reservations become their realities. All plans and futures disrupted, they must learn how to turn a mistake into an opportunity, discord into connection, all while a calculating shadow creeps plays at the fringes of their subconscious minds...

Sometimes you meet a person and it’s the wrong moment, the wrong city, the wrong life…Sometimes it takes years for both of you to be ready to fall in love… Simon Cowen’s life is as neatly tailored as his bespoke suits, everything and everyone in a particular place. Just because a person works on the shadier side of legality, doesn’t mean they have to be uncivilized. It’s this control that has made Simon good at his job. His parents were soulmates, but Simon decided a long time ago that he had no desire to ever be so weak to another person. Weakness didn’t fit into his neatly framed life. He certainly had no interest in falling in love with the sloppy, flirtatious Luc Allard. Or at least, that’s what he told himself. When an accident on a con job causes Simon to bond to Luc, he must relearn what it means to put his life in someone else’s hands. Can he learn how to woo his soulmate? Or has his aloof past already burned the bridges between them for good?

"Maggie understands that splatter for splatter's sake is boring. Psychopathy is boring. Coldness is boring. She's interested in feeling, and when her stories turn violent (as they frequently do), it's with a surreal emotional barbarity that distorts the entire world. You can mop up blood with any fabric. Maggie's concern is with the wound left behind, because the wound never leaves-it haunts. As a result, each of these stories leaves a wound of its own. Some weep, watching as you try (and fail) to recover. Others laugh. But never without feeling." -B.R. Yeager, author of Negative Space "And once finished, I felt like my tongue had been misplaced, guts heavy and expanded ... gums numb with a tongue that'd been put elsewhere, my mouth clean around a pipe weaving up through pitch and shadow ... and well past ready, primed for delight, waiting but knowing I had already been filled to skin; crying shit, hearing piss, fingernails seeping bile, pores dribbling blood, soles slopping off and out to meet a drain mid-floor ..." -Christopher Norris, author of Hunchback '88
