The island of Saint Lucia possesses a vibrant Creole culture that has given shape to a lively and creative people. Cyclical traditions akin to Community Theatre emerged out of discourses, counter-discourses and work practices during centuries of European slavery and/or colonization of the Amerindian, the African and the East Indian. This text provides descriptions of a selection of those traditions. The research was conducted when the author was employed with the Folk Research Centre and while he was engaged in graduate research as a student of Cultural Studies at UWI, Cave Hill. Although the author attempts to place the traditions under study in their historical context, his focus however is on a discussion of the impact of those traditions on the people and their society.

How is the memory of traumatic events, such as genocide and torture, inscribed within human bodies? In this book, Paul Connerton discusses social and cultural memory by looking at the role of mourning in the production of histories and the reticence of silence across many different cultures. In particular he looks at how memory is conveyed in gesture, bodily posture, speech and the senses – and how bodily memory, in turn, becomes manifested in cultural objects such as tattoos, letters, buildings and public spaces. It is argued that memory is more cultural and collective than it is individual. This book will appeal to researchers and students in anthropology, linguistic anthropology, sociology, social psychology and philosophy.

Paul Stoller, who was initiated into a spirit possession troupe, recounts an insider's tale of the Hauka with respect and "brotherly" deference. He combines narrative description, historical analysis, and reflections on the importance of embodiment and mimesis to social theory, with particular reference to the Songhay peoples of the Republic of Niger.
