Life for emerging adults is vastly different today than it was for their counterparts even a generation ago. Young people are waiting longer to marry, to have children, and to choose a career direction. As a result, they enjoy more freedom, opportunities, and personal growth than ever before. But the transition to adulthood is also more complex, disjointed, and confusing. In Lost in Transition, Christian Smith and his collaborators draw on 230 in-depth interviews with a broad cross-section of emerging adults (ages 18-23) to investigate the difficulties young people face today, the underlying causes of those difficulties, and the consequences both for individuals and for American society as a whole. Rampant consumer capitalism, ongoing failures in education, hyper-individualism, postmodernist moral relativism, and other aspects of American culture are all contributing to the chaotic terrain that emerging adults must cross. Smith identifies five major problems facing very many young people today: confused moral reasoning, routine intoxication, materialistic life goals, regrettable sexual experiences, and disengagement from civic and political life. The trouble does not lie only with the emerging adults or their poor individual decisions but has much deeper roots in mainstream American culture--a culture which emerging adults have largely inherited rather than created. Older adults, Smith argues, must recognize that much of the responsibility for the pain and confusion young people face lies with them. Rejecting both sky-is-falling alarmism on the one hand and complacent disregard on the other, Smith suggests the need for what he calls "realistic concern"--and a reconsideration of our cultural priorities and practices--that will help emerging adults more skillfully engage unique challenges they face. Even-handed, engagingly written, and based on comprehensive research, Lost in Transition brings much needed attention to the darker side of the transition to adulthood.

When he's killed at a young age in a car accident, the unnamed narrator enters the spirit world and is surprised to learn that the angels want him to join their ranks. Upon arriving in Heaven, he discovers an idealized world of comfort, but the euphoria doesn't last, as he's forced to return to the rigors of school in an angel-training course. Soon he discovers that the many disappointments of his life have left him with a bitter disdain for all of mankind, and that an angel's existence might not be for him. Then he befriends Marley, a fellow angel-trainee. After a life of tragedy and addiction ending in overdose, she doesn't feel worthy of receiving the halo herself. But amidst a surreal world of asexual attraction, guardian spirits who curse like truck drivers, and a supreme being who might possibly enjoy waiting diner tables, the two start to help each other overcome their metaphysical and personal distress. It seems in death, you might learn there's more to you than you ever knew in life.

Enter into rest. Where do you come to rest internally? The heart of flesh pumps blood, and the heart of the spirit resides in the mind. True rest must first be in the mind and the heart for the whole person and the whole life to rest. Activity and rest of the body, soul, and spirit are life. In His image the Lord made our life in perfection of purpose, intent, and craftsmanship. Where do you come to rest-in His presence with the extra ingredient of your purpose, intent, and craftsmanship? How do you enter activity-in Him or in you? Are you a citizen of heaven in yearning confident expectation, or an earthling putting down roots? "... as he thinks in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7).

In Foucault Beyond Foucault Jeffrey Nealon argues that critics have too hastily abandoned Foucault's mid-career reflections on power, and offers a revisionist reading of the philosopher's middle and later works. Retracing power's "intensification" in Foucault, Nealon argues that forms of political power remain central to Foucault's concerns. He allows us to reread Foucault's own conceptual itinerary and, more importantly, to think about how we might respond to the mutations of power that have taken place since the philosopher's death in 1984. In this, the book stages an overdue encounter between Foucault and post-Marxist economic history.
