Agroforestry (AF) is a dynamic, ecologically based, natural resources management system that, by integrating trees on farms, ranches, and in other landscapes, diversifies and increases production and promotes social, economic, and environmental benefits for land users. Further, it is receiving increasing attention as a sustainable land-management option worldwide because of its ecological, economic, and social attributes. Advances have been achieved by building on past research accomplishments and expanding AF’s stakeholder base, which now includes private/public partnerships, communities, ecologists, farmers, indigenous peoples, and policymakers in both temperate and tropical countries. AF has now been recognized as a valuable problem-solving approach to ensuring food security and rebuilding resilient rural environments. Recent studies have shown that more than 1 billion hectares of agricultural land have more than 10% tree cover. Of this area, 160 million hectares have more than 50% tree cover. Agricultural ecosystems can be further improved through AF to achieve environmental restoration, greater farm productivity, and key ecological services, including climate change mitigation and adaptation for improved rural livelihood. In fact, it is largely considered synonymous with climate smart agriculture and a remedy for many modern environmental challenges. Consequently, AF’s knowledge base is being expanded at a rapid rate, as illustrated by the increasing number and quality of scientific publications on various forms and different aspects of AF. This book offers state-of-the-art information on the fundamental concepts and history of AF and its evolution as a science, presenting a wealth of advanced research results and evaluations relating to different aspects of AF. Accordingly, it will be useful for a broad readership, including students, foresters, farmers, local communities, indigenous peoples, civil society institutions, media, policymakers and the general public.

Scientific Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 5.25, University of Yaoundé I, language: English, abstract: Investigations were conducted to assess farmers’ perceptions of the effects of associated tree species on soil fertility status under cocoa-based systems in the Evodoula district one of the oldest cocoa producing basin of southern Cameroon characterized by a high population density and land use intensity. Farmers were asked to rank, based on their knowledge of the fertilizing patterns of associated species, ten trees species with the most positive effects on soil fertility. The ranking was tested with respect to the amount of litter fall and the quantity of minerals released (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) as factors affecting the nutrient recycling process. In decreasing order of importance, the top ten species identified were Milicia excelsa, Alstonia boonei, Terminalia superba, Irvingia gabonensis, Ceiba pentandra, Ficus mucoso, Musanga cecropoides, Coula edulis, Eribroma oblungum and Zanthoxylum heitzi. The mean litter fall ranged from 19.03 to 0.52 kg/ha and N was the main nutrient in the leaf litter of the different tree species with its concentration varying from 29.81 to 53.56 g/kg and a mean of 42.31 g/kg. P was present in very low concentrations (from 0.4 to 1.96 g/kg) while K varied widely from 0.76 to 6.82 g/kg. Emerging to the forefront of sustainable production and consumption are a promising and rapidly evolving concept known as Voluntary Standard Systems (VSS). They encompass the three pillars of sustainability – social, environmental and economic aspects and consequently they can be considered as a tool, which makes sustainable development visible. Currently, they are becoming a significant element in international trade and in the promotion of sustainable development strategies, especially in the context of globalised markets and supply chains. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the current VSS concepts: from their nature and functioning, to the future outlook for their development. Plants are the basic source of food for both humans and animals. Most of the food is made of fruits and seeds. For these to be formed, pollination must first take place. This process is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther, which is the male structure of the flower, to the sigma on the female structure of the flower. The transfer process requires agents to be carried out. The agents can be either biotic or abiotic. Nature perfected this arrangement between the pollination agents and the plants. As ecosystems and agricultural systems are changing, this balanced arrangement becomes disturbed. This makes it necessary that pollination systems be studied so that necessary measures can be undertaken to ensure productivity. The chapters of this book present results in research undertaken to improve productivity in crops such as Actinidia chinensis (the kiwifruit), Theobroma cacao (cocoa), and Manicaria saccifera (a tropical forest palm). Some results are presented on tests to check the viability of pollen grains and the delivery of sperm cells through pollen tubes to the embryo sac. These results can serve as guidelines to any person seeking to improve pollination and productivity or to check the efficiency on pollination in ecosystems or agricultural production systems.
