The author found that to insert all the worthy names of gospel song and hymn writers in a single volume would make it too bulky; it is hoped it ma}r be possible to follow this work with a second volume. Beginning with Dr. Lowell Mason, the writer has endeavored to give a sketch and portrait of leading representatives of gospel song and hymn writers up to the present time. Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915) was the most prolific of all American hymn writers. Having lost her sight in infancy through a doctor's negligence, Fanny went on to compose more than 9,000 hymns, as well as various other songs, cantatas, and lyrical productions.
