African ecosystems comprise a wealthy repository of biodiversity, with a high proportion of native and endemic plant species, which makes them biologically unique and providers of a wide range of ecosystem services. A large part of African populations, in both rural and urban areas, depend on plants for their survival and welfare, but many ecosystems are being degraded, mostly due to the growing impacts of climate change and other anthropogenic actions and environmental problems. Loss of habitat and biodiversity affects livelihoods, water supply and food security and reduces the resilience of ecosystems in the African continent. The knowledge about the great African plant and ecosystem diversity, and the structure, composition and processes involved in vegetation dynamics, is crucial to promote their sustainable use and to preserve one of the most understudied regions in the world. This book, dedicated to Konjev Desender and Jean-Pierre Maelfait, is made up of a collection of 30 papers presented at the XIV European Carabidologists? Meeting in Westerbork, the Netherlands (September, 2009). Seventy-five specialists from 20 countries of Europe and Asia attended the meeting. Traditionally, the proceedings volumes of the European Carabidologists Meeting have become important milestones outlining the latest trends and achievements in carabidology.ÿThe aim of the organisers was to invite specialists from different countries and scientific schools to present both traditional and innovative approaches and methods in studying ground beetles. ABSTRACT The present study gives status of physic-chemical parameters of Lotus Lake, located on Toranmal Plateau at 21° 53’ 20’’ N latitude, 74° 28’ 01’’ E longitude and 3201 Ft., above MSL. Lotus Lake is a shallow perennial water body. Physico-chemical parameters were studied for two years (December 2006 to November 2008). The yearly data is divided into four seasons. The statistical analysis Mean, SEM, One way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation is carried out. Present study supports that physico-chemical properties of freshwater body are characteristics of the climatic, geochemical, geomorphological and pollution conditions prevailing in the drainage basin and the underlying aquifer. Significant seasonal variations in physico-chemical parameters were recorded at this fresh water wetland.
