Miller, an American Vanderbilt undergraduate student, met Duncan Kimani Kamau and Cornel Onyango Nyaywera, two men who had grown up witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS in their own communities in Kenya. Though Kamau and Nyaywera grew up in opposite ends of the country and came from opposing tribes, they overcame prejudice and cultural expectations to bring healing to their communities. With Miller’s help, their dream of empowering people to live a life beyond AIDS became a reality. Once Kamau, Miller, and Nyaywera realized their common purpose, CARE for AIDS was born. But it was only the beginning of their fight against AIDS, as they quickly discovered the fear and stigma that blanketed the disease. If their fledgling nonprofit was going to empower anyone, they would need help—and they found it, one local church at a time. As they slowly but steadily grew their network of friends and allies, Kamau, Miller, and Nyaywera discovered that the most complex problems can be solved through intentional, redemptive relationships.

The current Status criteria of the Indian Act contains descent-based rules akin to blood quantum that are particularly discriminatory against women and their descendants, which author Pamela Palmater argues will lead to the extinguishment of First Nations as legal and constitutional entities. Beginning with an historic overview of legislative enactments defining Indian status and their impact on First Nations, the author examines contemporary court rulings dealing with Indigenous identity, Aboriginal rights, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Palmater also examines band membership codes to determine if their reliance on status criteria perpetuates discrimination. She offers changes for determining Indigenous identity and citizenship and argues that First Nations must determine citizenship themselves.

John Hunter and Tom Byner are two young men from the Saline District of the Cherokee Nation during the fateful period between the United States Civil War and Oklahoma statehood. Theirs is a land and a people caught between the courts of Hanging Judge Parker and local tribal authority. In a time and place where most still carried a gun, events were occurring almost daily that were to bring about change to their people. Saturday, December 14, 2013. The case ended up taking seven hours. Her incision stretched from pubic bone to sternum. Although saturated with narcotic, she awakened writhing in pain. Any more pain meds . . . and she’d quit breathing. With help to carefully turn and position her onto her side, I then slipped in an epidural catheter. I put it up high, to be sure the band of numbness would cover the length of her incision. Within minutes after the first dose, she morphed into an entirely different person, chatting with us. Need for IV narcs, gone. She was able to take deep breaths and cough without pain. How could I have lived with myself had I not taken this extra step? It likely helped shorten her hospital stay and reduce the cost. Curses to any payer claiming epidurals for post-op pain are not necessary. Damn any CEO taking credit for the savings while putting a portion into his own pocket.

Beyond Blood Identities uncovers the social psychology of those who hold strong blood identities. In this highly original work, Jason D. Hill argues that strong racial, ethnic and national identities, which he refers to as 'tribal identities,' function according to a separatist logic that does irreparable damage to our moral lives. Drawing on scholarship in philosophy, sociology, and cultural anthropology, Hill contends that strong tribalism is a form of pathology.
