Starting in the nineteenth century in Germany, colourful military uniforms became a locus for various queer male fantasies, fostering an underground sexual economy of male prostitution as well as a political project to exploit the army’s prestige for queer emancipation. In the first decade of the twentieth century, however, a series of scandals derailed this emancipatory project. Simultaneously, public debates began to invoke homosexuality, sadism, transvestism, and other sexological concepts to criticize military policies and practices. In pursuing the threads with which queer authors and activists stitched their fantasies about uniforms, Jeffrey Schneider offers fresh perspectives on key debates over military secrecy, disciplinary abuses in the army, and German militarism. Drawing on a vast trove of materials ranging from sexological case studies, trial transcripts, and parliamentary debates to queer activist tracts, autobiographies, and literary texts, Uniform Fantasies uncovers a particularly modern set of concerns about such topics as outing closeted homosexuals, the presence of gay men in the military, and whether men in uniform are more masculine or more insecure about their sexual identity.

"The past decades witnessed a powerful return of struggles against what economic historian Karl Polanyi termed the commodification of social life. This book explores how organized workers in two metropolises of the late nineteenth century responded to the commodification of labor. In doing so, it reveals a striking continuity in collective opposition against the unfettered power of free markets. Drawing on contemporary feminist revisions of Polanyian thought, this book illustrates the ambiguous potential of movements for social protection"--Back cover.

An integrated approach to the subject, exploring a wide variety of solutions to pest control problems, including the non-chemical. Information on chemicals and pesticide applications have been brought up-to-date and are accompanied by discussions of environmental factors and safety aspects. While the perspective is Australian, many of these pests are universal in their distribution. Some 280 illustrations (80 in color). A sound practical guide that deserves a bibliography. Describes the struggle of prosperous German bourgeois leaders to impose order on the tumultuous growth of the cities during the rapid industrialization in the decades before World War I. Part civic boosterism, part social reform, and heavily laced with politics, their theories and actions spawned modern urban planning. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
