With a different take on the life of Benedict Arnold, Ben’s Tale reveals an epic story of greed and glory, family and friendship, treason and truthfulness. Told by a history buff who is also a London physician, the drama unfolds as the doctor gets an opportunity to treat—and befriend—the infamous general, and find out for himself whether Arnold’s story is one of slanderous legend or an extraordinary man wrongly accused. The so-called traitor unmasks his tale of woe–of jealous, ambitious founding fathers, doubts about the viability of the new nation and of his relationship with his beautiful wife, Peggy, and her role in facilitating his change of coat.

This book should be read by more than just families and friends of the deaf. -- Small Press It's an engrossing, eloquent, and moving story. Despite the cultural differences, this book is relevant to the situation in the States. -- Deaf Life Ben's Story tells of the struggle of a young British couple to provide their son with sign language instruction. In England, as in many places in the United States, the accepted training for deaf children includes hearing aids and oral training, but specifically excludes sign language instruction. Both of Ben's parents are educators, and once they discovered the possibility of sign language for Ben, it was their strong desire that he be taught using Total Communication. The authorities at every level warned Lorraine and Ray Fletcher that if Ben learned sign language his speech development would be delayed. What they discovered -- much to their delight -- was that sign language, far from deterring the development of Ben's speech, actually stimulated it. Ben's Story recounts the Fletcher's fight with authorities to educate their son as they saw fit. All parents and professionals interested in understanding more about raising deaf and hard of hearing children will benefit from this inspiring story.

A “deliciously frothy fairy tale” from the award-winning author of The Book of Boy and the Dairy Queen series (Horn Book Magazine, starred review). Catherine Gilbert Murdock’s talents for storytelling and creating strong female characters take a fresh turn in this spirited and sophisticated fairy tale. Benevolence is not your typical princess. With her parents lost to assassins, Princess Ben ends up under the thumb of the conniving Queen Sophia. Starved and miserable, locked in the castle’s highest tower, Ben stumbles upon a mysterious enchanted room. So begins her secret education in the magical arts: mastering an obstinate flying broomstick, furtively emptying the castle pantries, setting her hair on fire . . . But Ben’s private adventures are soon overwhelmed by a mortal threat to her kingdom. Can Ben save the country and herself from foul tyranny? “Murdock spins a rip-roaring yarn that borrows fairy-tale conventions (particularly from “Sleeping Beauty”) and reverses them to suit her strong, resourceful heroine. The wild adventure, intricately imagined setting, memorable characters, and romance will charm readers, especially fans of Gail Carson Levine’s Fairest.”—Booklist (starred review) “Murdock’s first venture into fantasy offers a fairy tale with several twists and surprises, and readers will be drawn into the world and moods that she creates.”—School Library Journal “Readers will love every minute they spend with [Princess Ben].”—Teensreadtoo.com This ebook includes a sample chapter of Wisdom’s Kiss.

The story of Ben is fiction, but it could be the story of more than one jazz musician who grew up in the twenties. Using the art-deco style of the period, Rachel Isadora not only captures the poignancy and yearning of a youthful talent, but in page after page of striking art seems to convey the very sound of music.
